''Chelonoidis niger'' (the Galápagos tortoise) is a tortoise species Endemism, endemic to the Galápagos Islands. It includes at least 14, and possibly up to 16, subspecies. Only 12 subspecies now exist: one on each of the islands of Santiago Island (Galápagos), Santiago, San Cristóbal Island, San Cristóbal, Pinzón Island, Pinzón, Española Island, Española, and Fernandina Island, Fernandina; two on Santa Cruz Island (Galápagos), Santa Cruz; one on each of the five main volcanoes of the largest island, Isabela Island (Galápagos), Isabela (Volcán Wolf, Wolf, Darwin, Alcedo Volcano, Alcedo, Sierra Negra (Galápagos), Sierra Negra, and Cerro Azul (Ecuador volcano), Cerro Azul); and one, ''Geochelone nigra abingdoni, abingdoni'' from Pinta Island, which is considered extinct as of June 24, 2012.
