This article lists political party, political parties in Ghana. Ghana has a multi-party system. However, there are two dominant political parties: the National Democratic Congress (Ghana), National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party. It is extremely difficult for anyone to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party. Regulation Political parties in Ghana are regulated under the Political Parties Act 574 passed in 2000. This spells out how political parties may be founded, registered and operated. Conservatism
Conservatism is a Philosophy of culture, cultural, Social philosophy, social, and political philosophy and ideology that seeks to promote and preserve traditional institutions, Convention (norm), customs, and Value (ethics and social sciences), values. National Democratic Party (Ghana)
The National Democratic Party (NDP) is a Ghanaian political party, founded in October 2012 as a split from the ruling National Democratic Congress. Its first leader was former NDC politician Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, who is also the wife of former President of Ghana and NDC founder Jerry Rawlings. Founding The NDP was founded in the wake of the death of President John Atta Mills in July 2012. Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings had been a 2011 rival of Atta Mills prior to his re-nomination as the NDC candidate for president. Kofi Akpaloo
Percival Kofi Akpaloo is a Ghanaian politician. He is the leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana. He was also the party's presidential candidate for the 2020 Ghanaian general election. Education Akpaloo studied at South Bank University to obtain MBA in Strategic Management and Master of Arts in Accounting. He also has ACCA in accounting from Emile Woolf College, London. Liberal Party Of Ghana
The Liberal Party of Ghana is a political party in Ghana. The party replaced the Independent People's Party (IPP) which was originally founded by Kofi Akpaloo in 2011. Akpaloo, who was nominated to be the presidential candidate for the IPP was disqualified from contesting the 2016 Ghanaian general election due to problems with his nomination forms. The new party pledges to put people's lives first through technology. 2020 general election The party endorsed Kofi Akpaloo as their presidential candidate. The running mate selected was Margaret Obrine Sarfo. Jerry Owusu, the Director of Operations of the party announced in May 2020 that the party intends to field candidates in all 275 constituencies throughout the country. Christian Kwabena Andrews who is popularly called ''Osofo Kyiri Abosom'' is a Ghanaian priest and politician. Career Aside from being a priest and a politician, Andrews is a farmer, entrepreneur and businessman. Politics Andrews launched the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) in March 2019. During the event, he described himself as the new Kwame Nkrumah and declared that the "spirit of Nkrumah is back". He hoped to be able to break the duopoly between the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party which have dominated Ghana during the Fourth Republic. 2020 Pandemic Andrews was keen to have as limited a lockdown period as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ghana Union Movement
The Ghana Union Movement is a political party in Ghana. It was founded by Christian Kwabena Andrews who is also the founder of the Life Assembly Worship Center in Accra. During the launch of the party, he declared that he is "new Kwame Nkrumah" and also that the "spirit of Nkrumah is back." The party's agenda received some backing from Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Kwame Nkrumah. 2020 general election Andrews is one of the presidential candidates for the 2020 Ghanaian general election. He filed his nomination papers on 7 October 2020. On completion of the registration process, his name came third from the top on the ballot paper. Akua Donkor
Akua Donkor (February 1952 – 28 October 2024) was a Ghanaian farmer and politician. She was the founder and leader of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP). Early life Akua Donkor was born in February 1952 and hailed from Ejuratia in the Afigya Kwabre District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana (then the Gold Coast). She was a Cocoa farmer by profession and was not known to have had any formal education. Personal life Akua Donkor birthed a daughter who goes by the name Ama Serwaa Bonsu. Politics Akua Donkor was initially an assembly woman for Heman electoral area in the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region. 2012 election She applied to contest as an independent candidate in the 2012 election to become president of Ghana but was disqualified by the Electoral Commission on accounts of not meeting the requirements set for the election. Ghana Freedom Party
The Ghana Freedom Party is a party founded by Akua Donkor, a farmer. Disqualifications Akua Donkor was disqualified by the Electoral Commission of Ghana from contesting the Ghanaian presidential election, 2012 as an independent candidate. This was due to irregularities on the registration documents for the election. Akua Donkor who was this time the party's candidate for the Ghanaian presidential election, 2016 was again disqualified in October 2016. She appeared to back the incumbent president at the time, John Mahama when her candidacy was rejected by the Electoral Commission. The party headquarters was sited at Kabu, which is a village in the Akwapim North Municipality of the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Great Consolidated Popular Party is a political party in Ghana. At the last elections, 7 December 2004, the party was part of the Grand Coalition, that won 4 out of 230 seats. Convention People's Party
The Convention People's Party (CPP) is a socialist political party in Ghana based on the ideas of the first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah. The CPP was formed in June 1949 after Nkrumah broke away from the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). Origins The Convention People's Party is descended from a line of political movements formed in the early half of the 20th century to spearhead the anti-colonial struggle in the Gold Coast. The movement that preceded it was the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) formed in August 1947 and led predominantly by members of the professional and business classes. 2024 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2024 to elect the president and all 276 members of Parliament. The incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo, having completed his constitutional term limits, was ineligible for re-election. Former President John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, won a majority of the votes, securing victory without the need for a runoff. Mahamudu Bawumia, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, conceded defeat the morning after the election. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mahama’s running mate, made history as the first woman elected Vice President of Ghana. In the parliamentary elections, the NDC won a landslide victory, winning 183 out of 276 seats, while the NPP secured 88 seats, with independent candidates also winning four seats.
