Althing
The (; ), anglicised as Althingi or Althing, is the Parliamentary sovereignty, supreme Parliament, national parliament of Iceland. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at ('Thing (assembly), thing fields' or 'assembly fields'), about east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. After Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing lost its legislative power, which was not restored until 1904 when Iceland gained home rule from Denmark. For 641 years, the Althing did not serve as the parliament of Iceland; ultimate power rested with the Norwegian, and subsequently the Danish throne. Even after Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing still held its sessions at until 1800, when it was discontinued. It was restored in 1844 by royal decree and moved to Reykjavík. Reykjavík North (Althing Constituency)
Reykjavík North () is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established in 2003 when the existing Reykjavík constituency was split into two. The constituency currently elects nine of the 63 members of the Althing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2024 parliamentary election it had 47,600 registered electors. History In March 1843 King Christian VIII of Denmark issued a royal decree converting the Althing into a consultative assembly. It consisted to 20 members popularly elected from single-member constituencies, one of which was Reykjavík. Andrés Ingi Jónsson
Andrés Ingi Jónsson (born 16 August 1979) is an Icelandic MP, who represented Reykjavík North as a member of the Pirate Party from 2017 to 2024. He was first elected to the Alþingi in 2016 as a member of the Left-Green Movement and again in 2017, later leaving the party in protest. He has an MA in War, Violence and Security from the University of Sussex and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Iceland. After his studies, he worked as a journalist and a committee secretary for the Constitutional Council. Political focus Andrés Ingi joined the Left-Green Movement during the 2009 Icelandic financial crisis protests and took a seat on the party's ticket for the 2009 elections. Þorsteinn Víglundsson
Þorsteinn Víglundsson (born 22 November 1969) is an Icelandic politician who served as a Member of the Althing for Viðreisn. He served as Iceland's Minister of Social Affairs and Equality in 2017, and under his leadership, a bill of law (amendments to the Gender Equality Act No. 10/2008) was passed by the Icelandic Parliament (Althingi) with a vast majority on 1 June 2017 and came into force on 1 January 2018. Companies and institutions employing 25 or more workers, on an annual basis, are required to obtain equal pay certification of their equal pay systems and the implementation thereof. The purpose of this obligatory certification is to enforce the current legislation prohibiting discriminatory practices based on gender and requiring women and men working for the same employer to be paid equal wages and enjoy equal terms of employment for the same jobs or jobs of equal value. Steinunn Þóra Árnadóttir (born 18 September 1977) is an Icelandic politician and former member of the Althing, from the Left-Green Movement. Political career Steinunn Þóra has a BA in Anthropology and an MA in Disability Studies, both from the University of Iceland. She has been active within the Multiple sclerosis, MS-Society of Iceland as well as the Organization of Disabled in the country.
