Known as the "Birthplace of Portugal" or "The Cradle City", Guimarães played a crucial role in the foundation of the oldest nation state in the world, serving as its first capital and the site of the Battle of São Mamede in 1128, where Portugal secured its independence from the Kingdom of Galicia. It received its Foral around 1096, the first one ever, by Henry, Count of Portugal, Count Henry, father of the first king Portugal, Afonso I of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, who's said to have been born in Guimarães. This historical significance has contributed to its architectural heritage, spanning from the pre-medieval period to contemporary times. Mumadona Dias, or Muniadomna Díaz (died 968), was a Galician people, Galician noble and County of Portugal, Countess of Portugal, who ruled the county jointly with her husband from about and then on her own after her husband's death around 950 until her death in 968. Celebrated, rich and the most powerful woman in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, she has been commemorated by several Portuguese cities.
