New Zealand State Highway Network
The New Zealand state highway network is the major national highway network in New Zealand. Nearly 100 roads in the North Island, North and South Islands are state highways. All state highways are administered by the NZ Transport Agency. The highways were originally designated using a two-tier system, national (SH 1 to 8) and provincial, with national highways having a higher standard and funding priorities. Now all are state highways, and the network consists of SH 1 running the length of both islands, SH 2 to 5 and 10 to 59 in the North Island, and SH 6 to 8 and 60 to 99 in the South Island, numbered approximately north to south. State highways are marked by red shield-shaped signs with white numbering (shields for the former provincial highways were blue). Road maps usually number state highways in this fashion. Picton, New Zealand
Picton () is a town in the Marlborough Region of New Zealand's South Island. The town is located near the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui, north of Blenheim, New Zealand, Blenheim and west of Wellington. Waikawa, Marlborough, Waikawa lies just north-east of Picton and is considered to be a contiguous part of the Picton urban area. Picton is a major hub in New Zealand's transport network, connecting the South Island road and rail network with ferries across Cook Strait to Wellington and the North Island. Paeroa
Paeroa is a town in the Hauraki District of the Waikato Region in the North Island of New Zealand. Located at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, it is close to the junction of the Waihou River and Ohinemuri River, and is approximately 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) south of the Firth of Thames. New Zealanders know the town for its mineral springs, which in the past provided the water used in a local soft drink, "Lemon & Paeroa". Ngauranga
Ngauranga is a suburb of New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, in the lower North Island. Situated on the western bank of Wellington Harbour, it lies to the north of the centre of the city. Ngauranga is lightly populated due to the rugged terrain and the area's focus on industry. The 2023 New Zealand census stated that the population of Ngauranga was 51. It includes the Ngauranga Gorge, through which New Zealand State Highway 1, State Highway 1 passes on its route out of Wellington to Porirua and the west coast. Pōkeno
Pōkeno is a small town in the Waikato District of the Waikato region in New Zealand, southeast of Auckland, from Tuakau and from Mercer, New Zealand, Mercer. Waikato Expressway
The Waikato Expressway is a dual carriageway section of (SH 1) in New Zealand's Waikato region. Constructed in stages, it forms part of the link between Auckland and Hamilton. Currently stretching from Auckland to south of Cambridge, the first section of the highway was built in 1993. Throughout its lifetime, it has undergone many upgrades to optimise traffic flow throughout the Waikato region, including various bypasses of many towns in the region, culminating with Hamilton in 2022. The final part of the Expressway was completed on 12 July 2022. The expressway forms a -long continuous four-lane dual carriageway from the Bombay Hills to beyond the town of Cambridge, south-east of Hamilton. Tamahere
Tamahere is a locality (located on a semi-rural ward that bears the same name) within Waikato District, New Zealand; on the outskirts of Hamilton. The majority of the Ward is zoned as Country Living, with a minimum lot size of 0.5ha. The landscape is dominated by several large gully systems that contribute to the Waikato River. Communities Alongside the village proper, the ward of Tamahere also includes the locality of The Narrows. In 2019, a new recreational reserve (Tamahere Park) was opened and includes sports fields for cricket, rugby, junior soccer and La Crosse. Horsham Downs
Horsham Downs is a locality about 9.5 km north of Hamilton. Before 1906, the area was undeveloped and covered in tea trees and ferns. After August 1906, sheep and cattle farms were successfully developed. A group of protected areas, the Horsham Downs Wildlife Management Reserves, are located in Horsham Downs. Gordonton
Gordonton () is a village and rural community in the Waikato District and Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located southeast of Taupiri on State Highway 1B. The area was initially called Hukanui, which means "heavy frost" in the Māori language. It was renamed to Gordonton after John Gordon, who was a manager for the New Zealand Land Association in the Waikato from 1886.
