Estonia
Estonia, officially the Republic of Estonia, is a country in Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland across from Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea across from Sweden, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by Russia. Katja Novitskova
Katja Novitskova (born 1984 in Tallinn, Estonia) is an Estonian installation artist. She lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin. Her work focuses on issues of technology, evolutionary processes, digital imagery and corporate aesthetics. Novitskova is interested in investigating how, "media actively redefines the world and culture, and everything" related to art, nature and commerce. Education Novitskova holds degrees in Semiotics and Cultural Studies as well as a specialization in Media Arts from the University of Tartu, Estonia. She also completed a Masters of Science in Digital Media, University of Lübeck, Germany in addition to studying at the Graphic Design department at the Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam. Further funding and research for her artistic practice has been supported by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, the residency programme for visual artists at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten and the Mondriaan Fund. Ilon Wikland
Maire-Ilon Wikland (née Pääbo; born 5 February 1930) is an Estonian-born Swedish artist and illustrator. Wikland was born in Tartu, Estonia and raised in Haapsalu, Lääne County on Estonia's Baltic coast. In 1944 she escaped with the family of a classmate from the second Soviet occupation of Estonia, to Sweden, where she arrived as a refugee. In 1953 Wikland applied for a job as illustrator at Rabén & Sjögren. She was met by Astrid Lindgren, who had just finished writing the book ''Mio, my Son'' and who could see immediately that Wikland was able to "draw fairytales". Wikland did a test-drawing for the book and after that her collaboration with Lindgren continued. Wikland has said that Lindgren's writing continually makes her see inner pictures. She also derives inspiration for her pictures from real life. In the same way that Lindgren wrote for "the child within her", Wikland often also draws for the child within her. Erna Viitol
Erna Viitol (née Erna Juhanson; 10 May 1920 – 11 November 2001) was an Estonian sculptor. Biography Viitol was born into a family of farmers in Ala, Valga County, Ala, Lõve Parish (now in Tõrva Parish), Valga County. She traveled to Stockholm, Sweden to study. Agaate Veeber
Agaate Veeber (also known as Agathe Veeber, born Agaate Wilhelmine Kanto; 23 February 1901 – 8 April 1988) was an Estonian graphic artist and illustrator who began her career in the 1920s in her native country of Estonia and continued in the United States after immigrating in 1948. Early life and education Agaate Veeber was born Agaate Wilhelmine Kanto in Tallinn to Karel and Ann Kanto (''née'' Leesment). She had one sister, Auguste Henriette, born in 1899. She attended secondary school at the Tallinn City I Girls' Gymnasium and began her artistic studies at Ants Laikmaa's Studio School in Tallinn, initially studying painting. In the late 1920s, she spent two semesters at the Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremberg in Germany, studying applied arts before returning to Estonia and enrolling at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Ann Tenno
Ann Tenno (née Ann Epler; born 4 December 1952 in Tartu) is an Estonian photographer and photo artist. Lonely Planet states that "some of the most spectacular and sensitive photographs of Estonia have been taken by Ann Tenno and published in books which best capture the spirit of Estonian nature." She is noted in particular for her town landscapes, especially photographs of the Estonian capital of Tallinn, and the churches and manor houses of Estonia. Early life In 1971 she graduated from Tartu Secondary School No. 5. In 1976 she graduated with a degree in algebra from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Tartu. She then worked in the field of mathematics in the Economic Department of the University of Tartu and Department of Mathematics of the Tallinn University of Technology until 1984, when she began working at the Design Institute of Cultural Monuments as a photographer.
