Checkmate is a fictional covert operations agency, as published by DC Comics. The roster of the agency has changed a great deal over the years. These roster lists are of the members during the agency's various incarnations. The codenames listed under Character are those used during the time frame of the particular iteration. Characters with more than one codename for that period have them listed chronologically and separated by a slash (/). Bolded names in the most recent iteration published are the current agency members. First appearance is the place where the character first appeared as a member of a particular iteration. It is not necessarily the first appearance of the character in print, nor the story depicting how the character joined the agency. Checkmate (comics)
Checkmate, a division of Task Force X, is a fictional Intelligence agency, covert operations agency appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The antihero team first appeared in ''Action Comics'' #598 (March 1988) and proceeded to have its own ongoing title in ''Checkmate!'' In the wake of events depicted in the mini-series ''The OMAC Project'' and ''Infinite Crisis'', Checkmate is re-chartered as a United Nations Security Council-affiliated agency and was again given its own series, ''Checkmate'' (vol. 2). Publication history The Checkmate organization was created by Paul Kupperberg and Steve Erwin, first appearing in ''Action Comics'' #598 (March 1988). The precursor to this fictional organization was known as the List of government agencies in DC Comics#The Agency, Agency, first appearing in ''Vigilante (comics), Vigilante'' #36. Secret Society Of Super Villains
Secret Society of Super Villains (SSoSV) is a DC Comics title that debuted in May–June 1976. The series presented a group of DC's supervillains, mostly foes of the Justice League, Justice League of America. The series was cancelled with issue #15 in July 1978, as part of the DC Implosion, a period when DC suddenly cancelled dozens of comics. In the decades following the cancellation of the original book, the fictional group has returned in many forms. Series conception Editor Gerry Conway created the team to be "a kind of 'evil' Justice League", inspired by the "Rogues Gallery" that fellow editor Julie Schwartz created for Barry Allen, the Flash. Since other editors were somewhat possessive towards the more popular DC Comics supervillains, Conway resorted to sifting through DC's back issues in search of members, finally selecting a lineup of relatively obscure and/or forgotten villains.
