"The Joker Is Wild" is an episode of the ''Batman'' television series in its first season, most notable for being Cesar Romero's debut as the Joker. It was first telecast as the fifth episode on ABC January 26, 1966, and was rerun on May 25, 1966, and May 24, 1967. Plot synopsis The story begins with the Joker in prison pitching in (and enjoying) a ballgame. After a few pitches, the catcher switches the ball with one he has stashed in his padding, and tells the Joker, "This is the one". As the batter hits the ball, a smoke cloud appears, and before anyone knows what has happened, the Joker escapes using a spring-loaded device that propels him over the prison wall. The only thing the Joker leaves behind is a statue of his face and bust that was concealed under the spring contraption. Jack Kruschen
Jacob "Jack" Kruschen (March 20, 1922 – April 2, 2002) was a Canadian character actor who worked primarily in American film, television and radio. Kruschen was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Dr. Dreyfuss in the 1960 comedy-drama ''The Apartment''. Early life Kruschen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His acting in an operetta produced at Hollywood High School brought him to the attention of CBS. Career Radio Kruschen began working at a radio station in Los Angeles when he was 16. Norman Foster (born Norman Foster Hoeffer; December 13, 1903 – July 7, 1976) was an American film director, screenwriter and actor. A Death Worse Than Fate
"A Death Worse Than Fate" is the tenth episode of the ''Batman'' television series in its first season. This episode was first broadcast on ABC February 10 and rerun on June 23, 1966, and continues and concludes the story of Zelda the Great, a magician whose fading career has led her to crime. The story began in "Zelda the Great". Plot synopsis From the previous episode, Zelda has kidnapped Aunt Harriet from Wayne Manor and demanded $100,000 for her safe return. Bruce Wayne must contact her within an hour, but the police cannot find the millionaire (because he is currently Batman). Max Hodge
Max Hodge (February 12, 1916 – August 17, 2007) was an American television writer who worked on shows including '' The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.'', ''CHiPS'' and '' Mission: Impossible'', and is perhaps best known for creating Mr. Freeze for ''Batman''. Hodge grew up in East Moline, Illinois and Michigan, later graduating from the University of Michigan then enlisting in the Navy during World War II. He then attended Pasadena Playhouse College of Theater Arts and began his television career in the 1950s as a producer working on industrial shows for Oldsmobile. "Rats Like Cheese" is the eighth episode of the ''Batman'' television series in its first season. "Instant Freeze" is the seventh episode of the ''Batman'' television series in its first season, originally airing on ABC February 2 and repeated on May 18, 1966. Plot The episodes opens with a mysterious stranger setting an ice rink on fire and then freezing the streets: he is then pursued by a policeman on a motorbike.
