Santana, São Tomé And Príncipe
Santana (Portuguese language, Portuguese for Saint Anne) is a town on the eastern coast of São Tomé Island, which is part of the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is the seat of Cantagalo District. The population of Santana with the adjacent settlements Cidade Alta, Cova Água, Gomes, Nova Olinda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Nova Olinda, Picão Flor, Praia Messias Alves, Riboque Santana and Zandrigo is 10,290 (2012). Elections In São Tomé And Príncipe
São Tomé and Príncipe elects on the national level a head of state – the president – and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by the people. The National Assembly (''Assembleia Nacional'') has 55 members, elected for a four-year term in seven multi-member constituencies by proportional representation. São Tomé and Príncipe has a multi-party system. The most recent legislative elections took place on the 25th of September 2022. Elections also happen on the regional and municipal level. Batepá Massacre
The Batepá massacre occurred on 3 February 1953 in colonial São Tomé when hundreds of native Creole peoples#Portuguese Africa, creoles known as ''Forro Creole, forros'' were massacred by the Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe, colonial administration and Portuguese landowners. Many ''forros'' believed the government intended to force them to work as contract laborers, to which they objected. In response, the governor blamed the unrest on communists and ordered the military to round up such individuals and for civilians to protect themselves. This quickly turned into a bloodbath, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of ''forros''. No communist conspiracy was ever proven. Background Carlos Gorgulho assumed office as governor in 1945.
