Stellar parallax is the apparent shift of position (''parallax'') of any nearby star (or other object) against the background of distant stars. By extension, it is a method for determining the distance to the star through trigonometry, the stellar parallax method. Created by the different orbital positions of Earth, the extremely small observed shift is largest at time intervals of about six months, when Earth arrives at opposite sides of the Sun in its orbit, giving a baseline (the shortest side of the triangle made by a star to be observed and two positions of Earth) distance of about two astronomical units between observations. HD 44594
HD 44594 is a star in the southern constellation Puppis. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 6.64, so it can be seen with the naked eye from the southern hemisphere under good viewing conditions. Based upon parallax measurements, it is located at a distance of from the Earth, giving it an absolute magnitude of 4.56. Measurement of the star's spectrum show it to match a stellar classification of G1.5V, which is close to the Sun's spectral class of G2V. In the wavelength range 3,250–8,750  Â, the energy emission of this star is very similar to the Sun, and thus it is considered a solar analog. The luminosity class 'V' means this is a main sequence star that is generating energy through the thermonuclear fusion of hydrogen at its core. The effective temperature of the outer envelope of HD 44594 is 5,840 K, which is giving it the characteristic yellow hue of a G-type star. Gamma Ceti (γ Ceti, abbreviated Gamma Cet, γ Cet) is a triple star system in the celestial equator, equatorial constellation of Cetus (constellation), Cetus. It has a combined apparent visual magnitude of 3.47. Based upon stellar parallax, parallax measurements, this star is located at a distance of about 80 light-years (24.4 parsecs) from the Sun. The three components are designated Gamma Ceti A (officially named Kaffaljidhma , the traditional name for the entire system), B and C. Nomenclature ''γ Ceti'' (Latinisation of names, Latinised to ''Gamma Ceti'') is the system's Bayer designation.
