Stellar parallax is the apparent shift of position (''parallax'') of any nearby star (or other object) against the background of distant stars. By extension, it is a method for determining the distance to the star through trigonometry, the stellar parallax method. Created by the different orbital positions of Earth, the extremely small observed shift is largest at time intervals of about six months, when Earth arrives at opposite sides of the Sun in its orbit, giving a baseline (the shortest side of the triangle made by a star to be observed and two positions of Earth) distance of about two astronomical units between observations. Epsilon Serpentis
Epsilon Serpentis, Latinized from ε Serpentis, is a single, white-hued star in the constellation Serpens, in its head (Serpens Caput). It is visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of +3.69. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 46.30  mas as seen from Earth, it is located 70 light years from the Sun. It is moving closer to the Sun with a radial velocity of −9 km/s. This is an Am star on the main-sequence with a stellar classification of kA2hA5mA7 V. This notation indicates the spectrum displays the calcium K-line of an A2 star, the hydrogen lines of an A5 star, and the metal lines of an A7 star. It has been examined for the presence of a magnetic field, but the detected level was not statistically significant. AT Microscopii is a binary star system located at a distance of from the Sun in the constellation of Microscopium. Both members are flare stars, meaning they are red dwarf stars that undergo random eruptions that increase their brightness. This pair lies physically near the red dwarf star AU Microscopii, which may mean they form a wide triple star system. Observational history In 1926, Dutch-American astronomer Willem Jacob Luyten reported that the lines in the spectrum of this star underwent variation. A photographic plate taken on June 23, 1895, showed bright lines of hydrogen that were much weaker on a plate taken June 29, 1895. A photograph taken on July 1, 1903, showed no such lines. HD 90089 (HR 4084; Gliese 392.1) is a star located in the northern circumpolar constellation Camelopardalis. With an apparent magnitude of 5.25, it is faintly visible to the naked eye under ideal conditions. This star is located relatively close at a distance of 75 light years, but is drifting away at a rate of almost 8 km/s. HD 90089 is an F4 main-sequence star with the calcium K-line and metallic lines of an F2 star. Although the spectral type is of a form that would indicate an Am star, it is not listed in any of the major catalogues of chemically peculiar stars. At present it has 1.29 times the mass of the Sun and 1.4 times its radius. Parallax measurements provide distance estimates of around 70 light years.
