List Of Sangam Poets
Sangam refers to the assembly of the highly learned people of the ancient Tamilakam, Tamil land, with the primary aim of advancing the literature. There is no historical evidence to suggest that there were three Sangams. It is a medieval myth propagated by the medieval writers. Sangam is a latter appellation given to the congregation of poets that often took place in ancient Pandian country, until around 300 CE, with 449 poets contributing under the patronage of 49 Pandyan dynasty, Pandyan kings. Kaveri Poompattanatthu Kaari Kannanar
Kārikkannanār, known in full as Kāviripoompattinathu Kārikkannanār (Tamil: காவிரிப்பூம்பட்டினத்துக் காரிக்கண்ணனார்), was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom 10 verses of the Sangam literature have been attributed, including verse 28 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Biography Hailing from Kaveri Poompattinam (present-day Puhar), Kaari Kannanar was a trader by occupation and has sung in praise of kings Chola Kura Palli Thunjiya Perunthirumavalavan, Pandiyan Ilavanthigai Palli Thunjiya Nanmaran, Pandiyan Velliyambalatthu Thunjiya Peruvaludhi, Aai Aandiran, and Pittan Kottran. He compared the Chola and Pandiya rulers with Lord Vishnu and Balarama. Nallur Naththathanar
Naththathanar, also known in full as Nallur Naththathanar or Idaikkali Naattu Nallur Naththathanar (Tamil: இடைக்கழி நாட்டு நல்லூர் நத்தத்தனார்), was a poet of the Sangam period who authored Sirupanatruppadai in the Pattuppattu anthology of the Sangam literature. In addition, verse 16 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai is also attributed to him. Biography Naththathanar hailed from the Idaikkali country and is believed to have an excellent knowledge of geography of the ancient Tamil land, including the cities of Madurai, Uraiyur, and Vanchi. Contribution to the Sangam literature Naththathanar has composed Sirupanatruppadai, a 269-line poetry in the ''Achiriyappa'' meter, under the Pattuppattu anthology. Mosikeeranar
Mōsi Keeranār (Tamil: மோசிகீரனார்) was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom 10 verses of the Sangam literature have been attributed, including verse 27 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Biography Mosikeeranar hailed from Mosur in Thondainadu. Keeran is his familial name. Mosikeeranar was said to be the contemporary of the Chera ruler Thagadoor Erindha Peruncheral Irumporai. He was known as the poet who mistakenly slept on the murasukattil (giant drum cot) of the ruler. Mangudi Marudhanar
Māngudi Maruthanār, also known as Mānkudi Kilār, Madhurai Kānchi Pulavar, and Kānchi Pulavanār, was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom 13 verses of the Sangam literature have been attributed, including verse 24 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. He was the author of Madurai Kaanchi of the Pathupattu (the Ten Idylls). Biography Mangudi Marudhanar hailed from the town of Mangudi and belonged to the Vellan caste. Contribution to the Sangam literature Mangudi Marudhanar wrote the Madurai Kaanchi literature of the Pathupattu (the Ten Idylls). Mamulanar
Mamulanar (Tamil: மாமூலனார்) was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom 31 verses of the Sangam literature have been attributed, including verse 8 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Biography Manulanar belonged to the Brahmin caste. Mamulanar has described about the destruction of Pataliputra by River Ganges. However, there was no mention about the event of Patalipura fire of the 1st century CE. These suggest that Mamulanar lived no later than the 1st century BCE. Also, his writing about the Mauryas and Nandas indicated that he must have lived before 320 BCE. All his writings are known to contain historical information. Nagan Devanar, known in full as Madurai Tamil Koothan Nagan Devanar (Tamil: மதுரைத் தமிழ்க் கூத்தன் நாகன்தேவனார்), was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom a sole verse of the Sangam literature has been attributed, in addition to verse 12 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Biography Nagan Devanar was born as "Devanar" and lived in Madurai. He was known for his expertise in the ancient Tamil theatre. Madhurai Perumaruthanār (Tamil: மதுரைப் பெருமருதனார்) was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom a single verse of the Sangam literature has been attributed, besides verse 37 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Biography Madurai Perumarudhanar hailed from the city of Madurai. He is the father of the Sangam poet Madurai Perumarudhu Ilanaganar. Contribution to the Sangam literature Madurai Perumarudhanar has written a sole Sangam verse—verse 241 of the Natrinai. Apart from this, he has also composed verse 37 in the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Nallanthuvanar (Tamil: நல்லந்துவனார்), also known in full as Madurai Aasiriyar Nallanthuvanar (Tamil: மதுரையாசிரியர் நல்லந்துவனார்), was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom 39 verses of the Sangam literature has been attributed, in addition to verse 18 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Biography Nallanthuvanar was born as "Anthuvan" and was known for his erudition in Tamil language and astronomy. He was praised by poet Madurai Marudhan Ilanaganar. Contribution to the Sangam literature Nallanthuvanar has written 39 Sangam verse, including 4 in Paripaadal (verses 6, 8, 11, and 20), 1 in Agananuru (verse 43), 1 in Natrinai (verse 88), and 33 in Kalithogai, besides verse 18 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Madurai Aruvai Vanigan Ilavettanar (Tamil: மதுரை அறுவை வாணிகன் இளவேட்டனார்) was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom 13 verses of the Sangam literature have been attributed, including verse 35 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Kovur Kilar
Kōvūr Kilār (Tamil: கோவூர் கிழார்) was a poet of the Sangam period, to whom 18 verses of the Sangam literature have been attributed, including verse 38 of the Tiruvalluva Maalai. Biography Kovoor Kilar hailed from the town of Kovoor in Sonaadu. He belonged to the vellalar caste and had friendly relationships with the Chola rulers. He was known for his bold and truthful attitude. He is also known for teaching moral lesson to a king who doubted him as spy. When king Killivalavan tried to trample the people of Malaiyaman by elephant, Kovoor Kilar boldly persuaded him to change his mind and act otherwise. He is believed to be the contemporary of Sangam poets Uraiyur Marutthuvan Dhamodharanar, Madalan Madurai Kumaranar, and Kaveri Poompattanatthu Kaari Kannanar, since these poets, too, have sung on the Chola ruler Kurappalli Thunjiya Perunthirumavalavan.
