Missiology
Missiology is the academic study of the Christian mission history and methodology, which began to be developed as an academic discipline in the 19th century. History Missiology as an academic discipline appeared only in the 19th century. It was the Scottish missionary Alexander Duff who first developed a systematic theory of mission and was appointed in 1867 to a new chair of Evangelistic Theology in Edinburgh. The chair was short-lived and closed after Duff's departure. Gustav Warneck is often recognized as the founder of Protestant missiology as a discipline. He founded the first scientific missionary periodical in 1874, ''Allgemeine Missions-Zeitschrift'', and was appointed the chair of missionary science at the University of Halle in Germany in 1897. His three-volume work on Protestant mission theory ''Evangelische Missionlehre'' and his survey of the history of Protestant missionary work were extremely important for the young discipline. Lesslie Newbigin
James Edward Lesslie Newbigin (8 December 1909 – 30 January 1998) was a British theologian, missiologist, missionary and author. Though originally ordained within the Church of Scotland, Newbigin spent much of his career serving as a missionary in India and became affiliated with the Church of South India and the United Reformed Church, becoming one of the Church of South India's first bishops. A prolific author who wrote on a wide range of theological topics, Newbigin is best known for his contributions to missiology and ecclesiology. He is also known for his involvement in both the dialogue regarding ecumenism and the Gospel and Our Culture movement. Thomas Schirrmacher
Thomas Paul Schirrmacher is a German Christian moral philosopher and a specialist in the Sociology of Religion and religious freedom. He is known as a global human rights activist and holds a chair in Theology (Ethics, Missiology, World Religions). Schirrmacher serves the World Evangelical Alliance as secretary general and as chair of the Theological Commission. He is also an Anglican realignment bishop. Since 2014 he is president of the International Council of the International Society for Human Rights and director of the International Institute for Religious Freedom. Andrew Walls
Andrew Finlay Walls (21 April 192812 August 2021) was a British historian of missions, best known for his pioneering studies of the history of the African church and a pioneer in the academic field of World Christianity. Biography Walls was born in 1928 in New Milton, England. He studied theology at Exeter College, Oxford, receiving a first-class degree in 1948, and completed his graduate studies in the early Church in 1956 under the patristics scholar Frank Leslie Cross. He taught at Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone (1957–62) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1962–65). He was later appointed to a post in ecclesiastical history in the University of Aberdeen in 1966, before being the first head of the Department of Religious studies in the University of Aberdeen (1970). Gustav Warneck
Gustav Adolf Warneck (1834–1910) was a German missiologist. In 1874, he established the first German missiological journal, ''Allgemeine Missionszeitschift''. He was also involved in the founding of the German Protestant Missions Committee in 1885, serving as secretary until 1901. He held the first university chair in missiology at Halle University from 1896 to 1908. He is considered to be one of the first missiologists. David Bosch describes him as "the father of missiology as a theological discipline." Life The oldest son of a master needlemaker, Warneck went from the family needleshop to study at the Francke Foundation and then studied with the theological faculty at Halle University beginning in 1855. Alan Richard Tippett was a Methodist missionary, missiologist, and anthropologist. Life Tippett was an Australian missionary to the Fiji Islands for more than 20 years, and an academic in the United States. Born 9 November 1911 in St Arnaud, Victoria, Alan Tippett was the son of William Tippett, a Methodist pastor from a family with a long tradition of Wesleyan involvement.Charles H. Bengt G. M. Sundkler (May 7, 1908, Degerfors, Västerbotten, Sweden - April 5, 1995, Uppsala, Sweden) was a Swedish-Tanzanian Church historian, missiologist, professor and bishop of Bukoba. Biography Sundkler was the son of Gustaf Sundkler, a merchant, and Lilly Bergman. His father was the son of Carl Gustaf Sinclair (1849-1919), the last member of the Swedish Counts dynasty Sinclair. James Augustin Brown Scherer
James A. B. Scherer (1870–1944) served as the last President (education), President of the Throop Polytechnic Institute from 1908 to 1920 prior to its renaming to the California Institute of Technology in 1921. Before being asked by George Ellery Hale to serve as President of Throop, Scherer was a Lutheran minister, one of the founders of the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church.
