The mayor of Austin is the official head of the city of Austin, Texas, Austin in the U.S. state of Texas. The office was established in 1840 after Austin incorporated as a city in 1839. The mayor of Austin is elected to a four-year term and limited to serving no more than two terms. Kirk Watson took office as mayor on January 6, 2023, for a second term, having served as mayor from 1997 to 2001. Kirk Watson
Kirk Preston Watson (born March 18, 1958) is an American attorney and politician who has served as the 59th mayor of Austin since 2023, previously holding the office as the 54th mayor from 1997 to 2001. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, he ran unsuccessfully for Texas Attorney General, Texas attorney general in the 2002 election, where he was defeated by Republican Party (United States), Republican Greg Abbott, later governor of Texas. In 2006, Watson was elected to the Texas Senate from Texas Senate, District 14, District 14. Jeffrey Mark "Jeff" Friedman (January 20, 1945 – June 8, 2007) was an American politician in the state of Texas. Friedman was a campus political activist who became the youngest person ever elected to the City Council of Austin, Texas in 1971. He is best remembered as the city's so-called " hippie mayor" who led an alliance of young, ethnic, and left wing voters to capture the reins of city government in 1975 — an event that helped cement Austin's place as a liberal bastion in a conservative state and region. Austin City Hall is the seat of Austin municipal government, located at 301 W 2nd St in downtown Austin, Texas ( USA). The current building was completed in 2004. Austin City Council
The Austin City Council is the unicameral legislature of the city of Austin, Texas, United States of America. The mayor is included as a member of the council and presides over all council meetings and ceremonies. The current mayor of Austin is Kirk Watson. The duty of the council is to decide the city budget, taxes, and various other ordinances. While the council is officially nonpartisan, all current council members are affiliated with the Democratic Party. Before 2012, the council was composed of six at-large elected members and the mayor, and members could only serve three terms (nine years) on the council. However, in 2012 the citizens of Austin approved two propositions that established ten single-member districts within the city and assigned council and mayoral seats staggered four-year terms, with members limited to two terms. Stephen Ira Adler (born March 23, 1956) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 58th mayor of Austin from 2015 to 2023. Adler has been a practicing attorney in Austin in the areas of eminent domain and civil rights law for 35 years. For eight years he worked as the chief of staff and later general counsel to Democratic State Senator Eliot Shapleigh in the Texas Legislature. Lee Leffingwell
Shelly "Lee" Leffingwell (born October 13, 1939) is an American environmentalist and politician who served as the 57th mayor of Austin from 2009 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, Leffingwell previously served as chair of Austin's Environmental Board. He was first elected to the Austin City Council in 2005, and won re-election in 2008. William Patrick Wynn (born September 10, 1961) is an American businessman and politician who served as the mayor of Austin, Texas, from 2003 to 2009. Family Born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, Wynn was the sixth of seven children. He attended Texas A&M University, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in Environmental Design in 1984.
