This is a list of Islands of Bangladesh. The islands of Bangladesh are scattered along the Bay of Bengal and the river mouth of the Padma River, Padma. The word "Char" is used in many of the names and refers to floodplain sediment islands in the Ganges Delta. Many large rivers originated from the Himalayas carry a high level of sediment and it accumulates across the shoreline of Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. This has led to significant changes in the morphology of the coastal area, including the development of the new Islands. Island
An island or isle is a piece of land, distinct from a continent, completely surrounded by water. There are continental islands, which were formed by being split from a continent by plate tectonics, and oceanic islands, which have never been part of a continent. Oceanic islands can be formed from volcano, volcanic activity, grow into atolls from coral reefs, and form from sediment along shorelines, creating barrier islands. River islands can also form from sediment and debris in rivers. Artificial islands are those made by humans, including small rocky outcroppings built out of lagoons and large-scale land reclamation projects used for development. Nijhum Dwip
Nijhum Dwip () is a small island under Hatiya upazila. It is situated in Noakhali District in Bangladesh. Once it was called Char Osmani, Baluar Char, Golden Island A cluster of islands (mainly, Ballar Char, Kamlar Char, Char Osman and Char Muri) emerged in the early 1950s as an alluvium in the shallow estuary of the Bay of Bengal on the south of Noakhali. These new sandbanks first drew the notice of a group of fishermen, who named it Baular Char (literally, the alluvium of sand) later transformed into Ballar Char. Hatia Island
Hatiya Island is an island in the northern Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, at the mouth of the Meghna river. The island falls under Hatiya Upazila of Noakhali District. The island has an area of 480 km2. Other major offshore islands of this region are Bhola Island (which is the largest) and Manpura Island. All of these islands are densely populated. It is frequently subject to cyclones and destructive ocean waves. Geography There are no traces of 100–150 years old left in Hatiya due to the erosion of nature in the face of the heavy flooding of the Meghna and the huge body of water in the Bay of Bengal. Researchers like Suresh Chandra Dutta mentions that every 138 to 140 years, one mile of landmass is created in Hatiya. Swarna Dweep
Swarna Dweep, also known as Jahaijar Char, is an inhabited island in the Bay of Bengal. It is a part of the Hatiya Upazila under Noakhali District of Chittagong Division, Bangladesh. It is administered by Bangladesh Army as a strategic training base. The Island is 360 square kilometer and is located in the Meghna estuary. History Swarna Dweep emerged in the Bay of Bengal in 1978 under Noakhali District and was named Jahaijar Char. The island was inaccessible and soon became a safe haven for bandits and pirates. In 2013, the Island was renamed to Swarna Dweep and the administration of the island was given to the Bangladesh Army, who were tasked to develop the island, establish government services, and maintain security. By 2017, Bangladesh Army had built two cyclone shelters and one army camp. The army has developed a daily farm, fish farming, and a coconut plantation. Bhasan Char
Bhasan Char (), also known as Char Bhasani (), is an island in Hatiya Upazila, Bangladesh. Until 2019 it was known as Thengar Char. It is located in the Bay of Bengal, about from Sandwip island and from the mainland. Geography Bhasan Char lies to the immediate southwest of Sandwip. It is a low-lying island formed from silt deposits, and is only accessible by boat and helicopter. As the island’s coastline is constantly shifting due to its newness and its position in the Ganges Delta, the refugee camp is protected by a system of levees. Urir Char () is an inhabited island in the Bay of Bengal. It is also a union parishad of Sandwip Upazila under Chattogram District in Chattogram Division, Bangladesh. Geography This river island is located north of Sandwip, and is surrounded by the Sandwip Channel in all directions and the Bay of Bengal southwards. To the island's south is Santoshpur Union, to its east is Mirsharai Upazila, to its north is the Musapur Union and finally to its west is Char Elahi and Char Clerk. History Around 1970/1971, an island emerged just northwest of Sandwip near the Meghna Estuary. Sandwip
Sandwip (, ) is an island located in the southeastern coast of Bangladesh in the Chittagong District. Along with the island of Urir Char and Bhasan Char, this is part of Sandwip Upazila. Description Sandwip is located in the north-east of the Bay of Bengal, near the port city of Chittagong. It is close to the mouth of the Meghna River in the Bay of Bengal and is separated from the Chittagong coast by Sandwip Channel. It has a population of nearly 700,000. Bhola Island
Bhola Island (also called Dakhin Shahbazpur) is the largest island of Bangladesh with an area of and a coastline of . It accounts for most of the land area of Bhola District in Barisal Division. Geography It is situated at the mouth of the Meghna River. There are ferry and launch services from Dhaka and Barisal. The Island is long and has a population of 1.7 million. A 1776 map indicates that it was oval-shaped yet it is currently more elongated because of erosion by the Meghna River. It is only above ocean level at the most elevated point. Due to its low elevation, large parts of the island have already been inundated by sea level rise, and the island is at serious risk of disappearing entirely.
