Rushville, New York
Rushville is a village situated in both Ontario and Yates Counties in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2019 American Community Survey, the population was 655. The majority of the Village of Rushville lies within the Town of Potter in Yates County, while a smaller portion extends into the Town of Gorham in Ontario County. It is one of two villages in Ontario County that spans across two townships and the only village in the county divided between two counties. History Rushville was initially known as Federal Hollow, a name derived from its early settlers affinity for the Federalist political party, and its location within one of Canandaigua Lake's many hollows, or valleys. Elias Gilbert became the first settler in the area, and established one of the first saw mills on the West River in 1800. Airmont, New York
Airmont is a village in the town of Ramapo, Rockland County, New York, United States, located north of the state of New Jersey, east of Suffern, south of Montebello, and west of Chestnut Ridge. The population was 10,166 at the 2020 census. The village of Airmont, incorporated in 1991, is a consolidation of the hamlets of Tallman, Airmont and South Monsey. Joseph Berger of ''The New York Times'' wrote in a 1997 article that Airmont was one of several Ramapo villages formed "to preserve the sparse Better Homes and Garden ambiance that attracted them to Rockland County." Afton, New York
Afton is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 2,769 at the 2020 census. Afton is situated in the southeast corner of the county and lies wholly within the original Township of Clinton. It was formed from the town of Bainbridge on November 18, 1857, and derives its name from Afton Water, a small river in the parish of New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, immortalized by the poet Robert Burns. It is bounded on the north by Bainbridge and Coventry, on the east by Delaware County, and on the west and south by Broome County. The town of Afton contains a village, also called Afton. Afton (village), New York
Afton is a village in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 822 at the 2010 census. The village is named after the poem " Sweet Afton" by Scottish poet Robert Burns, referring to the River Afton in Ayrshire, Scotland. The village of Afton is located in the town of Afton and is northeast of Binghamton. History The first settlement in the town, around 1786, was near the site of the present village. Ebenezer Landers built a home on the east side of the Susquehanna River. The home was later acquired by Dr. Carlton J. H. Hayes, professor of history at Columbia University and the United States ambassador to Spain during World War II. Hayes added the Pillard Porticho to the Landers home, and the structure continues to stand and is known as the Jericho Farm today. Addison, New York
Addison is a town in Steuben County, New York. The population was 2,397 at the 2020 census. The name was selected to honor the author Joseph Addison. An interior town in the southeastern part of the county, the town includes a village, also called Addison. History The town was first settled in 1791 by Samuel Rice. Originally a part of the old town of Painted Post, Addison was organized as Middletown at the time of Steuben County's creation in March 1796. The name was changed to Addison to honor of Joseph Addison, the English author, on April 6, 1808. The early settlers called it also Tuscarora. Addison Academy opened in 1840. In 1890, the town's population was 2,884. Addison is a village in Steuben County, New York, United States, in the southeast part of the town of the same name, and southwest of the city of Corning. The population was 1,763 at the 2010 census. The village and the surrounding town are named after the author Joseph Addison. History The village was first incorporated in 1854 and re-incorporated in 1873. Company E, 34th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was principally recruited here during the American Civil War. The population of Addison in 1990 was 1,842. The Addison Village Hall, Church of the Redeemer, and William Wombough House are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Adams is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. Named after President John Adams, the town had a population of 5,143 at the 2010 census. The town contains a village also named Adams. The village and town are south of Watertown. History Settlement began around 1800 at Adams village. David Smith built a sawmill at the present site of Adams in 1801. Renamed for John Adams in 1802 (the year after his presidency ended), the town of Adams was created from the survey townships of Aleppo and Orpheus. The eastern part of Adams was taken in 1804 to form the town of Rodman. During the War of 1812, the town of Adams formed a local militia for home defense.
