Glider Aircraft
A glider is a fixed-wing aircraft that is supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of the air against its lifting surfaces, and whose free flight does not depend on an engine. Most gliders do not have an engine, although motor-gliders have small engines for extending their flight when necessary by sustaining the altitude (normally a sailplane relies on rising air to maintain altitude) with some being powerful enough to take off by self-launch. There are a wide variety of types differing in the construction of their wings, aerodynamic efficiency, location of the pilot, controls and intended purpose. Most exploit meteorological phenomena to maintain or gain height. Gliders are principally used for the air sports of gliding, hang gliding and paragliding. However some spacecraft have been designed to descend as gliders and in the past military gliders have been used in warfare. IPD Periquito
The IPD Periquito (Brazilian name for the parakeet bird), was a single-seat sailplane of high-wing construction designed in 1956 by Guido Pessotti in Brazil. It had a wooden construction, with a plywood and canvas covering. Little conventional train, with fixed center skate and fixed drumstick, half-embedded. There was also a fixed skate on the tail. Variants ;Periquito I: Developed at the Institute of Aeronautics and Space, São José dos Campos, São Paulo, was designed to fulfill the following requirements as indicated in order of priority. IPT-6 Stratus
The IPT-6 Stratus, was a high-performance two-seat, high-wing sailplane. Design and development Stratus was conceived soon after its predecessor IPT-5 Jaraguá, created by Estonian engineer Johannes Lepper, who himself made the first flight of this sailplane. Construction It was built with the fuselage caves were made of guapuruvu and freijó, and the bird ribs were also made of freijó. The outer skin was made of pine plywood from paraná pine. IPT-5 Jaraguá
The IPT-5 Jaraguá, was a Brazilian sailplane aircraft designed with two seats in a tandem-seat configuration for general flying. Design and development Due to the war, all aircraft designers focused on new developments to achieve better performance for fighter aircraft, including the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnologicas from 1940. The institute's chief engineer, Romeu Corsini, worked with Clay Presgrave do Amaral, a glider design specialist, to develop an experimental sailplane that had a novel wing profile. By mid-1941, work on it had been completed and the first flight took place. From 1941, the aircraft was used for numerous tests over the next ten years. The IPT-5 had a circular fuselage with a largely glazed aerodynamic nose containing the enclosed cockpit with two side-by-side seats. CAP Saracura
The CAP Saracura ( Brazilian-Portuguese name for the Slaty-breasted wood rail), also designated IPT-3 Saracura, was a Brazilian monoplace glider aircraft designed and manufactured by ''Companhia Aeronáutica Paulista'' during 1942 for primary training and general flying. Background In the early 1940s, sailflying was gaining a lot of enthusiasts in Brazil, but gliders were lacking. With the escalation of the conflicts in Europe, it became more difficult to acquire equipment, mostly German, which had arrived in Brazil in significant numbers previously. Anticipating a business opportunity, Francisco Pignatari decided to ask the Technological Research Institute technicians for help in the studies and designs of a new glider. IPT-2 Aratinga
__NOTOC__ The IPT-2 Aratinga, was a Brazilian monoplane, single-seat glider designed and manufactured by the IPT engineers. The glider had an outer covering of plywood and canvas, the cabin protected by a bubble canopy, a novelty at the time for gliders. The aircraft was ready a year and a half after the beginning of its construction, and was towed to Cumbica, where it underwent its first flight tests, conducted by Clay Presgrave do Amaral. Once the tests were concluded, the Aratinga was towed by a de Havilland Tiger Moth aircraft to Rio de Janeiro, with stops made in São José dos Campos and Resende. There it was presented to the public countless times, until it was bought by a young engineer , who kept a small repair shop at Manguinhos Airport. Flight to the end of the decade.
