Linguistics
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. The areas of linguistic analysis are syntax (rules governing the structure of sentences), semantics (meaning), Morphology (linguistics), morphology (structure of words), phonetics (speech sounds and equivalent gestures in sign languages), phonology (the abstract sound system of a particular language, and analogous systems of sign languages), and pragmatics (how the context of use contributes to meaning). Subdisciplines such as biolinguistics (the study of the biological variables and evolution of language) and psycholinguistics (the study of psychological factors in human language) bridge many of these divisions. Semantics And Linguistic Theory
Semantics is the study of linguistic Meaning (philosophy), meaning. It examines what meaning is, how words get their meaning, and how the meaning of a complex expression depends on its parts. Part of this process involves the distinction between sense and reference. Sense is given by the ideas and concepts associated with an expression while reference is the object to which an expression points. Semantics contrasts with syntax, which studies the rules that dictate how to create grammatically correct sentences, and pragmatics, which investigates how people use language in communication. Lexical semantics is the branch of semantics that studies word meaning. It examines whether words have one or several meanings and in what lexical relations they stand to one another. Manchester Phonology Meeting
The Manchester Phonology Meeting (abbreviated and stylised as mfm) is an annual linguistic conference, held at Hulme Hall in Manchester, in the United Kingdom, from 1993–2018, and at other venues at the University of Manchester from 2019. Submitted abstracts undergo an anonymous peer-review process before being selected for inclusion by an organising committee and international advisory board of prominent linguists. Presentations have, over the years, taken on a broad range of phonological topics, from phonological acquisition and the phonological description of languages to the interfaces between phonology and other subfields of linguistics such as morphology and syntax. The Manchester Phonology Meeting is the longest-running international conference dedicated exclusively to phonology. International Congress Of Phonetic Sciences
The International Phonetic Association (IPA; , API) is an organization that promotes the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science. The IPA's major contribution to phonetics is the International Phonetic Alphabet—a notational standard for the phonetic representation of all languages. The acronym IPA refers to both the association and the alphabet. On 30 June 2015, it was incorporated as a British private company limited by guarantee. The IPA also oversees the ''Journal of the International Phonetic Association'', published by Cambridge University Press, whose articles include descriptions of languages as well as other topics in phonetics. New Sounds
''New Sounds'' was originally a 10" LP compiling previously released 78 rpm records on the Blue Note label. A CD reissue with the same name and cover appeared in 1991, but while using many of the same personnel, had only two tracks in common with the original LP. It instead compiled a distinct James Moody 10" LP (''James Moody and his Modernists'', BLP 5006) with the Art Blakey tracks and included several tracks previously unreleased on LP or any format. Conversely, the tracks omitted from the CD, which were on the Moody LP, have not been reissued on CD. Background In December 1947, Art Blakey formed a group for his first sessions as a leader. Dubbed Art Blakey's Messengers, this group was a precursor to The Jazz Messengers groups of the next decade and beyond. Blakey had recently gone on a pilgrimage to Africa and adopted Islam. West African Linguistic Society
The West African Linguistic Society (abbreviated as WALS) is an academic scholarly society formed in 1965 to foster and encourage research in the West African languages and literature as well as provide a permanent forum for interaction and exchange of ideas among scholars of African languages. Membership of the Society is largely drawn from teachers and researchers in universities and research institutes and they include scholars from all over the world.
