Linden, Western Australia
Linden is an abandoned town located in the Goldfields-Esperance region in Western Australia. It is found between Kalgoorlie and Laverton near the southern edge of Lake Carey. In the mid-1890s gold was discovered in the area and in late 1895 four claims were pegged and registered. One claim was by Green, McClellan and the Pyke brothers, another by Linden, Hartigan and Burgess, and the last two by Goodrich, Hayward and Haunort. More claims followed in 1896. Later in 1896 the Mining Warden W. Lambden Owen suggested that a townsite be declared. Owen suggested the name be Griffithston, in honor of the founder, William Griffiths, but the Lands Department instead chose Linden. Despite this only six men were on the field at the time. The town was surveyed and gazetted in 1897. The population had reduced to one by 1906 but the following year increased to 70 and by 1913 another influx occurred. The Shire of Menzies is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, north of Kalgoorlie. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Menzies. History The Shire of Menzies originated as the Menzies Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912 after the subdivision of the North Coolgardie Road District into three separate road districts (Menzies, Kookynie and Mt Malcolm). The North Coolgardie Road District had absorbed three municipalities on 1 March 1912, including the Municipality of Menzies covering the Menzies township, but had quickly proven too large and cumbersome to administer and was broken up. The Kookynie Road District merged into the Menzies Road District in mid-1918. Lake Carey
Lake Carey is a salt lake located in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. It was named in 1869 by surveyor John Forrest in company with Tommy Windich, after Thomas Campbell Carey, the government surveyor to whom Forrest had been apprenticed in 1863. Lake Carey is one of a chain of lakes that makes up the Carey Palaeodrainage system, formed during the Tertiary Period, from about 65 million years ago. The Carey Palaeodrainage system extends about from Wiluna to the Eucla Basin. The elongated lake extends from to south of Laverton, within the Laverton Tectonic Zone, an area associated with gold mining since the 1890s. Mining activity and its discharge has affected the lake.
