Linck Nunataks
The Whitmore Mountains () are an isolated mountain range of the Transantarctic Mountains System, located in the Marie Byrd Land region of West Antarctica. They consist of three mountains and a cluster of nunataks extending over 15 miles. The group was visited and surveyed on January 2, 1959, by William H. Chapman, cartographer with the Horlick Mountains Traverse Party (1958–59). The mountains were named by Chapman for George D. Whitmore, Chief Topographic Engineer of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), who was a member of the Working Group on Cartography of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. Wenceslaus Linck
Wenceslaus Linck (german: Wenzel Linck) (29 March 1736 – 8 February 1797) was the last of the outstanding Jesuit missionary-explorers in Baja California. Born in Neudek, Bohemia, he entered the Jesuit order at age 18 and studied at Brno and Prague. In New Spain, he continued his studies in Mexico City and Puebla between 1756 and 1761. In 1762 he was sent to Baja California, initially to Santa Gertrudis, at that time the northernmost Jesuit establishment. After preparing under Santa Gertrudis' missionary, Georg Retz, Linck moved north in the same year to found San Francisco de Borja Adac among the northern Cochimí. In addition to administering the mission at San Borja, over the next five years Linck undertook a series of exploring expeditions to scout future mission sites and resolve geographical puzzles. Ernst Linck (14 October 1874 – 29 June 1935) was a Swiss painter.Baumgartner, M.: Linck, Ernst', 1998. In German. URL last accessed 2007-12-20. Born in Windisch, he became a decorator ( apprenticeship in Zürich from 1889 to 1890) and then worked in several Swiss cities as a statue painter. After two study trips to Italy in 1894 and in 1899 he settled at Bern, where he opened a school of painting that he carried on until 1912. Louis Linck (January 12, 1895 – October 31, 1962) was a French and American sculptor. During his lifetime of sculpting he worked for a number of private clients as well as the Works Progress Administration (WPA), during the Depression, and the International College of Surgeons. His most accessible work is a number of larger-than-life statues permanently on display at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. Biography Early life Louis Linck was born in Paris and grew up in the 18th district (Arrondissement). His father was an accountant, and although Louis also had a knack for math, he preferred art (much to his father's dismay). He had two sisters, although one died in childhood, and his mother died when he was 18. He had just graduated with a degree in Engineering, but like most men of his generation, he soon joined the French Army at the outbreak of World War I.
