Limonar, Cuba
Limonar is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. Overview The municipality is divided into the barrios of Canímar, Guamacaro, Caoba, Sumidero, Coliseo, and San Miguel. Established in 1876 as ''Guamacaro'', the name was changed to Limonar in the 1950s, when it achieved municipality status. Limonar is the hometown of jumper Javier Sotomayor; jumper Marino Drake; fine art painter Aimeé García Marrero; as well as professional baseball player Silvio García. Matanzas Province
Matanzas () is one of the provinces of Cuba. Major towns in the province include Cárdenas, Colón, Jovellanos and the capital of the same name, Matanzas. The resort town of Varadero is also located in this province. Among Cuban provinces, Matanzas is one of the most industrialized, with petroleum wells, refineries, supertanker facilities, and 21 sugar mills to process the harvests of the fields of sugarcane in the province. Geography The second largest in Cuba, Matanzas province is largely flat, with its highest point (Pan de Matanzas) at only 380m above sea level. Javier Sotomayor Sanabria (; born 13 October 1967) is a Cuban former track and field athlete who specialized in the high jump and is the current Men's high jump world record progression, world record holder. The 1992 Summer Olympics, 1992 Olympic gold medalist, he was the dominant high jumper of the 1990s; his personal best of makes him the only person ever to have cleared . Aimeé García Marrero (born 1972) is a Cuban painter and mixed media artist. She has exhibited her work internationally and has participated in several art biennials. García Marrero lives in Havana. Biography Aimeé García Marrero was born in 1972 in Limonar, Matanzas, Cuba. She graduated in 1991 from the Escuela Profesional de Artes Plásticas in Camagüey; followed by study at Instituto Superior de Arte and graduation in 1996. San Juan de Dios de Cárdenas, or simply Cárdenas (), is a municipality and city in the Matanzas Province of Cuba, about by air by roadeast of Havana. Cárdenas is the 15th most-populated Cuban city and the second most populated one not being a provincial seat, after Manzanillo. Jovellanos
Jovellanos is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. Overview The municipality is divided into the barrios of Asunción, Isabel, Realengo and San José. It was founded in 1842 as Corral de la Bemba on the location of an old ranch called ''Bemba''. It took its current name in 1870, in honor of the Spanish writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. The same year it achieved the status of ''villa'' (town). Jovellanos is also called "Bemba" by its inhabitants and locals. "Bemba" means "big lip" in Cuban Spanish; this term refers to the black population of the city. To outsiders, it may have negative racial overtones, but in the city this is not the case. Inside Jovellanos, the black and white population for the most part live harmoniously, side by side. Therefore, "Bemba" is an affectionate name for the town used by locals.
