Lilburn, Georgia
Lilburn is a city in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. The population was 14,502 at the 2020 census. The estimated population was 12,810 in 2019. It is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. History The city of Lilburn was founded in 1890 by the Seaboard Air Line Railway. The area previously known as "McDaniel" was renamed "Lilburn" after the general superintendent of the railroad, Lilburn Trigg Myers of Virginia. The town was incorporated as Lilburn on July 27, 1910. A devastating fire and hard economic times in the 1920s ended the prosperity. A revitalization of the original historic area has emerged with shopping and restaurants in the Old Town district which has been described as a "slice of history." BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a Hindu temple outside of Atlanta, Georgia, inaugurated on August 26, 2007, by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, a denomination of the Swaminarayan branch of Hinduism headed by Mahant Swami Maharaj. The mandir is located in the city of Lilburn in a suburb of Atlanta and was constructed in accordance with the Shilpa shastras, which are ancient Hindu architectural scriptures. It was the largest mandir of its kind outside of India. The mandir is made of 34,450 pieces of hand-carved Italian marble, Turkish Limestone and Indian pink sandstone, and are all situated on over 30 acres of landscaped grounds. The mandir complex also includes a large assembly hall, family activity center, classrooms, and an exhibition on the key tenets of Hinduism. U.S. Route 29 or U.S. Highway 29 (US 29) is a north–south United States Numbered Highway that runs for from Pensacola, Florida, to Ellicott City, Maryland, just west of Baltimore, Maryland, in the Eastern United States, connecting the Florida Panhandle to the Washington–Baltimore combined statistical area. Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS; ) is a Hindu denomination within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. It was formed in 1905 by Shastri Yagnapurushdas ( Shastriji Maharaj) following his conviction that Swaminarayan remained present on earth through a lineage of gurus starting with Gunatitanand Swami.
