Liberty High School (Bedford, Virginia)
Liberty High School is one of the three high schools in Bedford County, Virginia. Liberty High School opened in 1964. Its mascot is the "Minuteman." School colors are red, white and navy blue. The school serves students from Villamont, Thaxton, Montvale, Big Island and Bedford. The principal of Liberty High School is Mr. Justin Tucker, and the assistant principals are Dawn Verhoeff and Ernie Sawyer. Student body The 2009-2010 enrollment was 1,004 in grades 9–12. Racial makeup of the school is approx. 78% White, 21% Black, and 1% other. Academics Approximately 80% of the students who go to LHS graduate. 52% of the 2004 graduates continued their formal education beyond high school. The Jefferson Scholarship is a merit scholarship that provides four years of fully funded study at the University of Virginia in the United States. The scholarship covers tuition and room and board, and also provides money for summer travel, independent research, and study abroad. Application to the scholarship is by invitation only. Around 30 "Scholars" are selected annually from some 6,000 schools who may each nominate one student. Thaxton, Virginia
Thaxton is an unincorporated community in western Bedford County, Virginia, United States. The community is located along U.S. Route 460 between Bedford and Montvale. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Thomas Methodist Episcopal Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Thaxton was the site of a deadly train accident on July 2, 1889 that killed at least 18 and injured 21. The accident, caused when a passenger train derailed over a section of track that had been washed away by unusually heavy rains, was one of the deadliest railroad accidents in Virginia's history. A memorial was erected later that year in Cleveland, Tennessee in memory of three of the victims, all from prominent families in that city, who were on their way to attend the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Staunton River High School is one of the three high schools in Bedford County, Virginia. SRHS opened in the fall of 1963. History Staunton River High School opened October 3, 1963, after Bedford County Public Schools mandated the consolidation of multiple surrounding high schools: Stewartsville High School, Moneta High School, and Huddleston High Schools.
