Liberal Union (Spain, 1983)
The Liberal Union ( es, Unión Liberal; UL) was a small Spanish liberal party founded by Pedro Schwartz in 1983 and officially launched on March 23 of that year. History In the 1982 general election, Pedro Schwartz ran as an independent in the lists of the coalition formed by People's Alliance and the People's Democratic Party (AP-PDP), obtaining a bench of deputy by Madrid. He convinced the coalition leader, Manuel Fraga, of the need to create a liberal party with which will dispute the votes of the political center. Fraga acceded and Schwartz created the Liberal Union party that joined the coalition between AP and PDP (with what the coalition was renamed as AP-PDP-UL). The party was registered in the Register of the Ministry of Interior on January 18, 1983. On January 26, 1984, in an attempt to "renew" the party, Antonio Fontán replaced in the party presidency to Pedro Schwartz. The People's Coalition ( es, link=no, Coalición Popular) was a Spanish political coalition comprising national and regional right-wing parties to contest various general, regional and municipal elections between 1983 and 1987. Esperanza Aguirre y Gil de Biedma (; born 3 January 1952) is a Spanish politician. As member of the People's Party (PP), she served as President of the Senate between 1999 and 2002 (becoming the first female politician to have held the post), as President of the Community of Madrid between 2003 and 2012 and as Minister of Education and Culture (1996–1999). She also chaired the People's Party of the Community of Madrid between 2004 and 2016. Spanish General Election, 1986
The 1986 Spanish general election was held on Sunday, 22 June 1986, to elect the 3rd Cortes Generales of the Kingdom of Spain. All 350 seats in the Congress of Deputies were up for election, as well as 208 of 254 seats in the Senate. The election was held after the referendum on Spanish membership in NATO in March 1986 had resulted in a surprising win for the 'In' camp headed by Prime Minister Felipe González. Reinforced from the referendum result, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) sought to take advantage of the favorable political situation. The election resulted in the PSOE winning a second consecutive—albeit diminished—majority with 184 out of 350 seats. Pedro Schwartz
Pedro Schwartz Girón (born 1935), OBE, is a Spanish economist and former politician. Early life Schwartz was born on 30 January 1935 in Madrid. His father was Juan Schwartz Díaz-Flores, a diplomat who served as Spanish ambassador in Austria and contributed to the salvation of jews during the Holocaust. Schwartz graduated from the Complutense University of Madrid, where he received bachelor of arts and doctorate of law degrees. He received a master's degree and a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. He married his first wife, Mercedes Juste Werner in 1966, and had one child. He has three children with his second wife Ana Maria Bravo Zabalgoitia (born 1945). Career Schwartz is the Fundación Rafael del Pino Research Professor of Economics at CEU San Pablo University. The Liberal Party ( es, Partido Liberal; PL) was a liberal political party in Spain founded in 1976. History The PL was initially scheduled to contest the 1977 Spanish general election within Adolfo Suárez's Union of the Democratic Centre (UCD) platform, but on 8 May 1977 the party announced that it would withdraw from the UCD and would not be contesting the upcoming election. It would then rejoin the UCD after the 1979 Spanish general election and until 1983, when it aligned itself with the People's Alliance (AP), the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Liberal Union (UL). On 22 December 1984 the latter merged into the Liberal Party. These three parties formed the People's Coalition for the 1986 election. Antonio Fontán Pérez, 1st Marquess of Guadalcanal (15 October 1923 – 14 January 2010) was a Spanish journalist recognized for his work in promoting press freedom in his country. He was also a well-known Catholic and a member of Opus Dei. Antonio Fontán was the editor of the independent newspaper ''Madrid'' from 1967 to 1971. The periodical openly criticized Francisco Franco's authoritarian rule. In 1968, the government began a campaign against the newspaper, in which Fontán was prosecuted 19 times and fined 10 times in the span of four months. In October 1971, the authorities demanded Fontán's resignation, closing down the paper a few weeks later. Fontán's staunch defense of the principles of free expression during those five years as editor earned him and his staff a unique place in the annals of Spanish journalism.
