El Sauce, Nicaragua
El Sauce () is a town and a municipality in the León Department of Nicaragua. Located in the foothills of the Segovia Mountains, the municipality has a population of 31,750 and covers an area of 693 km2. El Sauce is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Achuapa and Estelí and bordered to the south by the municipality of Larreynaga. History El Sauce was originally called Guayabal. The town gained much attention when a statue called the Black Christ of Esquipulas was sent there from Guatemala was placed for the first time under a willow tree. Larreynaga () is the second largest municipality in the León Department of Nicaragua. The municipality seat is the town of Malpaisillo. The estimated population of the municipality is 33,117 but it is steadily growing at a rate of 2.22% yearly. History The municipality of Larreynaga was founded by Colonel Manuel Ignacio Pereira Quintana on August 11, 1944. The town of Malpaisillo was officially declared a city in September 1968. It got its name "Larreynaga" from Miguel Larreynaga, a Nicaraguan philosopher, humanist, lawyer and poet. The municipality of Larreynaga is home to the Cerro Negro volcano, just 10 km from the city of Malpaisillo. Cerro Negro has erupted frequently since its first eruption. Nagarote () is a town and a municipality in the León Department of Nicaragua. The town of Nagarote has a population of 25,827 while the rural areas surrounding it has a population of 13,437. Nagarote is located from Managua. History Nagarote formerly had a flourishing sea port called Puerto Sandino. This port was attacked in 1983, with much destruction to the facilities which effectively destroyed the port. Economy and tourism Nagarote's economy is largely based on cattle ranching and agriculture. Its fertile soils give rise to crops such as soybeans, cotton, peanuts, corn, vegetables and tobacco.
