Lew, Oxfordshire
Lew is a village and civil parish about southwest of Witney in the West Oxfordshire District of Oxfordshire, England. The 2001 Census recorded the parish population as 65. Since 2012 the parish has been part of the Curbridge and Lew joint parish council area, sharing a parish council with the adjacent civil parish of Curbridge. History Evidence of early human habitation in the parish includes a tumulus, probably Anglo-Saxon, on a high hill west of the village. The village's place-name, recorded as ''Hlæwe'' in 984, means "tumulus" in Old English. Until the 19th century Lew was a township in the parish of Bampton. It became a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1857, called Bampton Lew. The parish was united with Bampton in 1917, and since 1976 has formed part of the benefice of Bampton with Clanfield. River Lew
The River Lew can refer to either of two short rivers that lie close to each other in Devon, England. The more northerly of the two rises just south of the village of Beaworthy, and flows east, then turns north to run past Hatherleigh before joining the River Torridge about 1 km north of the town. Its name is incorporated into that of the village of Northlew. The more southerly of the two rises on the northwest corner of Dartmoor, near Sourton, and flows west and somewhat south, through the Lew Valley past Lewtrenchard and south of Lewdown before joining the River Lyd (Devon), River Lyd near Marystow. It has in earlier times also been known as Lew Water. The ''Anglo-Saxon Chronicle'' records a battle in 825 in which Devon forces loyal to Egbert of Wessex defeated the Cornwall, Cornish at Gafulford; and this is thought to be Galford on the banks of this river, though some translations render it as Camelford, some 20 miles further west. LEW Hennigsdorf
The rail vehicle factory in Hennigsdorf, Germany, was founded in 1910 by AEG (German company), AEG. Locomotive production began in 1913, and in the 1930s absorbed the work of the August Borsig locomotive factory, being renamed the Borsig Lokomotiv Werke GmbH until 1944. After the Second World War the factory was nationalised in the German Democratic Republic and produced electric locomotives for home use and for export, mainly to Communist Bloc countries under the name Lokomotivbau-Elektrotechnische Werke (LEW). After German reunification in 1990, the plant returned to AEG ownership, becoming AEG Schienenfahrzeuge GmbH, and then passed through mergers of its parent companies to Adtranz (1996), Bombardier Transportation (2001) and then Alstom (2021). Under Adtranz's ownership production of locomotives ended, and the site now manufactures Diesel multiple unit, diesel and electric multiple units. ''Lew'' was a Manning Wardle built in 1925 for the narrow gauge Lynton and Barnstaple Railway. History ''Lew'', following L&B tradition, was named after one of the local rivers with a three-letter name, the River Lew. ''Lew'' was built to the same design as the previous L&B Manning Wardle locomotives, but with a redesigned cab to eliminate a smoke trap and give more room to the crew. After the railway closed, the remaining L&B equipment was sold at auction in November 1935. The nameplates, along with the nameplates of the other locomotives, were removed and donated to York Railway Museum (the predecessor of the National Railway Museum). ''Lew'' was purchased to work the trains dismantling the railway, and was used for this purpose until late summer 1936. In September 1936, Lew was photographed with the words "A.L.C. Auburn-Lewiston Airport is a public airport in Androscoggin County, Maine, United States. It opened in 1935. It is five miles southwest of the cities of Auburn and Lewiston, which jointly own and operate the airport. The airport is not served by any commercial airline, but is served by several charter airlines. The airport was the site of the Bar Harbor Airlines Flight 1808 accident, which killed Samantha Smith, who gained global notoriety following her correspondence with Soviet leader Yuri Andropov during the Cold War. Lewiston NAAF During World War II, the airfield was under the control of the United States Navy for use as a base for anti-submarine patrols by Squadron VS-31. Northlew
Northlew is a village and civil parish in the West Devon district of the county of Devon, England. To the west of the village, but within the parish, are the hamlets of West Kimber and East Kimber. The village falls within the electoral ward of Lew Valley. Its population at the 2011 census was 2,024. Geography and history The village is approximately 7 miles (11 km) northwest of the town of Okehampton, and most places in the village have excellent views over Dartmoor. The village is relatively isolated, not being served by any main roads.
