Legacy Recordings
Legacy Recordings is an American record label that is a division of Sony Music. Formed in 1990 after Sony's acquisition of CBS Records, Legacy originally handled the archives of Sony Music-owned labels Columbia Records and Epic Records. In 2004, under the Sony BMG joint venture, the label began to manage the archives of RCA Records, J Records, Windham Hill Records, Arista, LaFace, Jive, and Buddah Records. Legacy Recordings also distributes Philadelphia International Records and the catalog of recordings produced by Phil Spector. It is not related to the defunct British independent label Legacy Records. Reissues/The Essential Series ''The Essential Series'' are one- or two-disc compilations of an artist's extensive catalog. ''This Is Jazz'' is a mid-priced series of jazz albums issued by Legacy Recordings from 1996 to 1998 in association with the Columbia (CK numbers) and Epic (EK numbers) divisions of Sony Music Entertainment Sony Music Entertainment (SME), commonly known as Sony Music, is an American multinational music company owned by Japanese conglomerate Sony Group Corporation. Lawrence Cohn
Lawrence Cohn (October 4, 1932 – October 31, 2023) was an American lawyer, record company executive, and blues collector. He is best known as one of the creators of Legacy Recordings, a branch of Sony Music Entertainment and as the originator and producer of the Roots 'N' Blues series. Life and career Lawrence Cohn was born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and as a child moved with his family to Bensonhurst in Brooklyn. He started listening to, and collecting, blues records as a child, continuing through his teens when he also started attending jazz and blues performances in New York City. After leaving school he attended City College of New York, but left during his studies to serve in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. When the war ended he toured widely as a member of the Army basketball team, before returning to complete college and enrol at Brooklyn Law School.
