Lede () is a Municipalities of Belgium, municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders, in the Denderstreek near the cities of Ghent, Aalst, Belgium, Aalst and Dendermonde. In 2011, Lede had a population of 17,882 and area of 29.69 km2, a population density of 575 inhabitants per km2. The current mayor of Lede is Geertrui Van de Velde (Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams, CD&V). Name of town The meaning of the name 'Lede' comes from the Dutch word 'Ledenaars' which means 'The Proud Farmers' Geography The municipality comprises the deelgemeente, sub-municipalities of Impe, Lede proper, Oordegem, Smetlede, Wanzele, and the hamlet of Papegem. Arrondissement Of Aalst
The Arrondissement of Aalst (; ) is one of the six administrative Arrondissements of Belgium, arrondissements in the Provinces of Belgium, Province of East Flanders, Belgium. It forms the Judicial Arrondissement of Dendermonde together with the Arrondissements of Arrondissement of Dendermonde, Dendermonde and Arrondissement of Sint-Niklaas, Sint-Niklaas. History The Arrondissement of Aalst was created in 1818 by the merging of the canton of Aalst from the Arrondissement of Dendermonde with the cantons of Geraardsbergen, Herzele, Ninove and Zottegem from the Arrondissement of Oudenaarde. Juan Francisco de Bette y Croy-Solre, 3rd Marquis of Lede (c. 1660 – 11 January 1725) was a military commander in Spanish service and viceroy of Sicily. Guillaume de Bette, 1st Marquess of Lede ( 1600– 23 June 1658), Baron of Péronne, Lord of Impe, Knight of Santiago, was a military commander and diplomat from the Spanish Netherlands. Life Bette was born at Lede around the beginning of the 17th century, the son of John de Bette, Lord of Lede and Joanna, lady of Bergen. He married Anna Marie de Hornes-Bassignies, daughter of Gerald de Hornes, 1st Count of Bassignies (1560-1612), Royal Chamberlain and Governor of Mechelen. They had five children, and he was succeeded as Marquess of Lede by Ambrosius his eldest son. His cousin, Françoise de Bette, was the 26th abbess of Forest Abbey. Entering upon a military career, he became colonel of an infantry regiment in the Army of Flanders, and acted as military governor of Maastricht during the 1632 siege. Mesen Castle
Mesen Castle was an important noble residence in Lede, Belgium, today partly ruined and completely abandoned. The castle is considered to have been one of the most important aristocratic estates of the 18th century. History Originally the vast estate and castle were private owned by the Marquess of Lede. Among the castle's residents were Françoise de Bette and Jean François de Bette, 3rd Marquess of Lede. The 18th-century facade was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni for the 4th Marquess, Emmanuel de Bette. It is considered one of this architect's major works. The main facade has a dorian colonnade with balustrade and large pediment, with heraldic crest (heraldry), crest of the house of Bette, holding lions. The Marquess of Lede () was a Flemish title in use during the Ancien Régime. Lede, Belgium, Lede is a city in Flanders, Belgium. History Jacques, son of Adrian Bette, Lord of Angrelles inherited the Heerlijkheid of Lede, of his father in law Jean de Gruutere (1501 - 1556). By Spanish Royal decree the Heerlijkheid was elevated to a barony. And finally the title ''Marquess of Lede'' was created on 3 August 1633 by King Philip IV of Spain, Felipe IV for Guillaume de Bette, 1st Marquess of Lede after his participation in the Capture of Maastricht.
