Leasingham, South Australia
Leasingham is the name of a hamlet on the southern edge of the Clare Valley, in the Mid North of South Australia. It is approximately 117 kilometres from the state's capital, Adelaide and 17 kilometres south of the town of Clare. Although the surrounding country is elevated, the township is located in lower country at the intersection of Main North Road and the connecting roads to Mintaro (to the East) and Hoyleton (to the West). Leasingham is bisected by the Eyre Creek as it makes its way to the Wakefield River. The '' Riesling Trail'' is on the western fringe of the township, following the former railway route between Auburn and Clare. History The Leasingham district was the ancestral home of the Ngadjuri people. The first European explorer, John Hill, passed through the district in April 1839. The Eyre Creek is an ephemeral watercourse in the Mid North region of the Australian state of South Australia. Course and features The creek rises east of Mount Horrocks and drains south through and before reaching its confluence with the Wakefield River north of in the Clare Valley. Leasingham
Leasingham is a village and civil parish in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated less than north from Sleaford, and just off the A15. The hamlet of Roxholm lies to the north. When combined with Rauceby figures, there are a total of 916 households as of 2011. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,584. The B1209 passes through the village to join the A153 further east, passing across Leasingham Moor. Close by to the west is RAF Cranwell. The A15 used to run through the village on Captain's Hill until the 1950s. Captain's Hill takes its name from the local landowner, Captain Richard Wharton-Myddleton, who had been an ensign at the battle of Waterloo. He lived in Leasingham Hall (built about 1836) now a Grade II listed house. John Hill (explorer)
John Hill (c. 1810 – 11 August 1860) was an English explorer of South Australia and part of the European land exploration of Australia, European exploration of Australia. Hill was the first European to see and traverse the Clare Valley. An enigmatic and little-known individual, during the late 1830s John Hill sighted and named several important rivers of South Australia, as well as many lesser streams and creeks. The former unquestionably include the Wakefield River, Wakefield and Hutt River (South Australia), Hutt rivers, plus (most probably) the Gilbert River (South Australia), Gilbert and Light River (South Australia), Light rivers. Ngadjuri
The Ngadjuri people are a group of Aboriginal Australian people whose traditional lands lie in the mid north of South Australia with a territory extending from Gawler in the south to Orroroo in the Flinders Ranges in the north. Name Their ethnonym is derived from two words: ''ŋadlu'', meaning "we" and ''juri'' signifying "man", hence "we men". Language Wilhelm Schmidt proposed that, together with the languages of the Kaurna, Narungga and Nukunu, the Ngadjuri language formed one of the elements of a subgroup he called the Miṟu languages. Riesling Trail
The Riesling Trail is a long walking and cycling track located in the Clare Valley, South Australia. Established for recreational purposes, it runs between Auburn and Clare, passing through several towns and villages along the way, including Leasingham, Watervale, Penwortham and Sevenhill. The trail is named after Riesling, the most important white grape variety in the Clare Valley wine region. It continues north of Clare to the area known as Barinia. The Riesling Trail route is part of the former Spalding railway line branch line which ran between Riverton in the south to a northern terminus at Spalding. The section of railway from Riverton to Clare was opened in 1918.
