Abel Gance (; born Abel Eugène Alexandre Péréthon; 25 October 188910 November 1981) was a French film director, producer, writer and actor. A pioneer in the theory and practice of montage, he is best known for three major silent films: ''J'accuse (1919 film), J'accuse'' (1919), ''La Roue'' (1923), and ''Napoléon (1927 film), Napoléon'' (1927). Early life Born in Paris in 1889, Abel Gance was the illegitimate son of a prosperous doctor, Abel Flamant, and a working-class mother, Françoise Péréthon (or Perthon). Initially taking his mother's name, he was brought up until the age of eight by his maternal grandparents in the coal-mining town of Commentry in central France. He then returned to Paris to rejoin his mother, who had by then married Adolphe Gance, a chauffeur and mechanic, whose name Abel then adopted. Louis Nalpas
Louis Nalpas (1884–1948) was a Greek-French film producer. He was a leading producer during the silent era, and was employed by the large French studio Pathé.:30 He was behind the company's construction of the Victorine Studios in Nice in 1921, which attempted to create a version of Hollywood on the French Riviera.:95 He then broke away to form his own production company. He was the elder brother of producer Alex Nalpas. Nalpas produced many of the early films of director Abel Gance. Paul Vermoyal
Pierre Paul Vermoyal (18 October 1888 – 28 September 1925) was a French stage and film actor. Biography Vermoyal was born in Braye-en-Laonnois, Aisne, Picardy. He began his career on the stages of the Grand Guignol theatre in the Quartier Pigalle area of Paris in the 1910s. His first known film appearance was in the 1916 Maurice Mariaud directed short film ''Le roi de l'étain'', produced by Pathé Frères. He would go on to appear in a number of films during the 1910s directed by Mariaud, Abel Gance, Jean Manoussi and Robert Boudrioz, among others. In 1922 he appeared in the Charles Burguet directed serial film ''The Mysteries of Paris'' as Maître Ferrand. The film serial ran in twelve installments and was based on the novel of the same name by Eugène Sue. Silent Film
A silent film is a film without synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of inter- title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era, which existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in larger cities, an orchestra—would play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. Though at the time the technology to synchronize sound with the film did not exist, music was seen as an essential part of the viewing experience. Léon Mathot (5 March 1886, Roubaix, Nord-Pas-de-Calais - 6 March 1968, in Paris) was a French film actor and film director best known perhaps for playing Edmond Dantes in ''The Count of Monte Cristo (1918 series), The Count of Monte Cristo'' serial (film), film serial in 1918.
