Las Animas, Chile
Las Ánimas, is an industrial and residential neighborhood located on the northern side of Valdivia Its main access points are: From the north, through route T-202 and the Puente Santa Elvira and through the south, Puente Calle-Calle. It is also connected to Teja Island, by the Cau-Cau bridge. History The beginnings of the area date to the foundation of Valdivia in 1552, when the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia crossed from present-day Las Animas to Valdivia During the re-founding of the city by the Spaniards, around 1645, a fortification was erected on the "Los Castaños" area as way of defending themselves from the attack of the indigenous population, however this emplacement was destroyed on December 25 of that year. Valdivia
Valdivia (; Mapuche: Ainil) is a city and commune in southern Chile, administered by the Municipality of Valdivia. The city is named after its founder, Pedro de Valdivia, and is located at the confluence of the Calle-Calle, Valdivia, and Cau-Cau Rivers, approximately east of the coastal towns of Corral and Niebla. Since October 2007, Valdivia has been the capital of Los Ríos Region and is also the capital of Valdivia Province. Teja Island
Teja island (Spanish: ''isla Teja'') is an island in the city of Valdivia, Chile, surrounded by three rivers: Cau-Cau river to the north, Cruces river to the west and Valdivia river to the southeast. Prior to the mid-19th century, the island was known as ''isla Valenzuela'' after Francisco de Valenzuela, an encomendero that settled there in 1552. In the second half of the 19th century, the island became known for its roof tile (Spanish: ''teja'') and brick factory, hence the name ''isla Teja''. Initially it was outside the proper city, but with the arrival of German immigrants, many of them settled there, and since 1939, the island is directly connected to downtown Valdivia through the Pedro de Valdivia bridge. Pedro De Valdivia
Pedro Gutiérrez de Valdivia or Valdiva (; April 17, 1497 – December 25, 1553) was a Spanish ''conquistador'' and the first royal governor of Chile. After having served with the Spanish army in Italy and Flanders, he was sent to South America in 1534, where he served as lieutenant under Francisco Pizarro in Peru, acting as his second in command. In 1540, Valdivia led an expedition of 150 Spaniards into Chile, where he defeated a large force of indigenous warriors and founded Santiago in 1541. He extended Spanish rule south to the Biobío River in 1546, fought again in Peru (1546–1548), and returned to Chile as governor in 1549. He began to colonize Chile south of the Biobío and founded Concepción, Chile, Concepción in 1550. He was captured and killed by Mapuche Indians during the Arauco War in 1553. German Colonization Of Valdivia, Osorno And Llanquihue
From 1850 to 1875, some 30,000 German immigrants settled in the region around Valdivia, Osorno and Llanquihue in Southern Chile as part of a state-led colonization scheme. Some of these immigrants had left Europe in the aftermath of the German revolutions of 1848–49. They brought skills and assets as artisans, farmers and merchants to Chile, contributing to the nascent country's economic and industrial development. The 1960 Valdivia earthquake and tsunami () or the Great Chilean earthquake (''Gran terremoto de Chile'') occurred on 22 May 1960. Most studies have placed it at 9.5–9.6 on the moment magnitude scale, while some studies have placed the magnitude lower than 9.4, making it the most powerful earthquake ever recorded.
