Lapstone
Lapstone is an Australian township on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Mountains (Australia), Blue Mountains in New South Wales at an elevation of 160 m (525 ft). Lapstone is located 62 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD in the Local government in Australia, local government area of the City of Blue Mountains and is part of the federal electorate of Division of Macquarie, Macquarie. Lapstone consists mostly of stand-alone housing and has a few public facilities. At the , Lapstone had a population of 948 people. Lapstone was originally bought and developed by Arthur J. Hand, an alderman of the Blue Mountains City Council. Lapstone is the first town in the easternmost escarpment of the Blue Mountains. Knapsack Viaduct
The Lapstone Zig Zag was a Zig Zag (railway), zig zag railway built between and stations on the Main Western railway line, New South Wales, Main Western Line of New South Wales in Australia. Constructed between 1863 and 1865 to overcome an otherwise insurmountable climb up the eastern side of the Blue Mountains (Australia), Blue Mountains, the zig zag and associated Knapsack Viaduct, a Hawkesbury sandstone, sandstone arch bridge, arch viaduct, were designed by John Whitton, Engineer-in-Charge of New South Wales Government Railways, and were built by William Watkins. The zig zag was listed on the City of Blue Mountains, Blue Mountains local government New South Wales Heritage Database, heritage register on 27 December 1991; while the adjacent Knapsack Viaduct was listed on the New South Wales Heritage Database on 2 April 1999. Lapstone Railway Station
Lapstone railway station is located on the Main Western line in New South Wales, Australia. It serves the Blue Mountains village of Lapstone opening on 24 February 1964. History The station was created in 1964 after being funded by Alderman Arthur Hand, who founded the town of Lapstone. Great Western Highway is a state highway in New South Wales, Australia. From east to west, the highway links Sydney with Bathurst, New South Wales, Bathurst, on the state's Central Tablelands. The Lennox Bridge, Glenbrook is a heritage-listed road bridge that carries the Mitchell's Pass across Brookside Creek (also known as Lapstone Creek), located at Glenbrook, in the City of Blue Mountains local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The bridge was designed by David Lennox and built from 1832 to 1833 by James Randall and other convicts. It is also known as Lennox Bridge or The Horseshoe Bridge. John Whitton (1820 near Wakefield, Yorkshire, England – 20 February 1898), an English people, Anglo–Australians, Australian Railway systems engineering, railway civil engineer, engineer, was the Engineer-in-Charge for the New South Wales Government Railways, serving between 1856 and 1890, considered the Father of New South Wales Railways. Blue Mountains Line
The Blue Mountains Line (BMT) is an intercity rail service serving the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. The line travels west from Sydney to the major town of Katoomba and on to Mount Victoria, Lithgow and Bathurst. Mount Victoria is the terminus for most electric services, but some services terminate at Lithgow instead. Two express services per day in each direction, known as the Bathurst Bullet, extend to the regional city of Bathurst, which is supplemented by road coaches connecting Bathurst to Lithgow. Due to electrification limits at Lithgow, the Bathurst Bullet is run using the Endeavour railcars, which operate on diesel. John Lucas (Australian Politician)
John Lucas (24 June 1818 – 1 March 1902) was a builder and politician in colonial New South Wales, a member of both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. Early life Lucas was born on 24 June 1818 at Kingston, part of , to John Lucas, a miller and builder, and Mary Rowley, a daughter of Thomas Rowley. He was educated at a Church of England school in Liverpool, and Captain Beveridge's boarding school. He left school to be apprenticed as a carpenter, the trade of his grandfather Nathaniel Lucas. Political career He first stood for the Legislative Assembly at the 1859 election for Canterbury, but was unsuccessful. He won the seat at the 1860 by-election, holding it at the 1860 general election. In December 1864 he was elected to both Canterbury, and Hartley, choosing to represent Hartley. RAAF Base Glenbrook
RAAF Base Glenbrook is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base located in Glenbrook, in the Lower Blue Mountains, approximately west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. The base serves as home to Headquarters Air Command of the RAAF. There is no airfield although it has a heliport, or helicopter landing site (HLS) and most administrative services are located on the nearby RAAF Base Richmond. Parts of the site are heritage-listed and comprise the Officers' Mess, once the Hotel. During World War Two, men stationed at the base co-ordinated the stockpiling of mustard gas in the disused Glenbrook railway tunnel. In 2009 the Minister for Defence, John Faulkner, announced that the base would be closed by 2015, and its command operations transfer to RAAF Base Amberley. Closure has yet to occur.
