Laois County Hurling Team
The Laois county hurling team represents Laois in hurling and is governed by Laois GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the Joe McDonagh Cup and the National Hurling League. Laois's home ground is O'Moore Park, Portlaoise. The team's manager is Willie Maher. The team last won the Leinster Senior Championship in 1949, the All-Ireland Senior Championship in 1915 and has never won the National League. History Laois won one All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) title, in 1915, when the day was so wet the team reportedly played the second half in their overcoats. Laois has also won three All-Ireland Senior B Hurling Championship titles. The hurlers reached National Hurling League (NHL) semi-finals in 1981 and 1983. Hurling
Hurling (, ') is an outdoor Team sport, team game of ancient Gaelic culture, Gaelic Irish origin, played by men and women. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much glossary of Gaelic games terms, terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. Camross GAA
Camross GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association hurling and Gaelic football club based near Coolrain in County Laois, Ireland. History Founded in 1903, the club is the most successful hurling club in County Laois. The club's colours are black and amber. In 1957, Camross amalgamated with Killanure – their parish counterparts. In 1957, following the amalgamation, they won the Junior Championship beating St Fintans, Colt. This was followed with an intermediate title in 1958. The Camross club did not win the Laois Senior Hurling Championship until 1959 but since then they have added a record 26 more senior hurling titles to their roll of honour (27 titles in total). They last won the Laois Senior Hurling Championship in 2023, defeating Abbeyleix St Lazarian's. Matthew Whelan (hurler)
Matthew Whelan (born 1 February 1988) is an Irish hurler who plays for Laois Senior Championship club Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton. He is a former member of the Laois senior hurling team. Career Whelan first came to Gaelic games prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Borris-in-Ossory club, before eventually joining the club's top adult team. After the creation of the new Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton club, he went on to win a County Senior Championship in 2016, having earlier won three intermediate titles. Whelan first played at inter-county level as a dual player with the Laois minor teams. He won a Leinster Minor Championship title in 2005, before winning an All-Ireland Schools' Championship title in 2006. Whelan was straight out of the minor grade when he made his Laois senior hurling team debut in 2007. Abbeyleix St Lazerians is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Abbeyleix, County Laois, Ireland. The club grounds are called Fr Breen Park and the club colours are Primrose and Blue. Enda Rowland
Enda Rowland (born 1995) is an Irish hurler who plays for Laois Senior Championship club Abbeyleix and is the captain of the Laois senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a goalkeeper. Playing career Heywood Community School Rowland first came to prominence as a hurler with Heywood Community School. He played in every grade of hurling before eventually joining the college's senior hurling team and enjoyed several Leinster Championship successes. Institute of Technology, Carlow During his studies at the Institute of Technology, Carlow, Rowland was selected in goal for the college's senior hurling team. On 25 February 2017, he was in goal when IT Carlow suffered a 3-24 to 1-19 defeat by Mary Immaculate College in the Fitzgibbon Cup final. The Dublin county hurling team represents Dublin in hurling and is governed by Dublin GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship and the National Hurling League.
