Lanús Athletic Club
Lanús Athletic Club was an Argentine sports club located in the Remedios de Escalada district of Lanús Partido, established by employees of railway company Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway. While initially established as a cricket club, Lanús later added a football team. That squad competed officially during the first years of football in Argentina, playing in the top division, Primera División, from 1897 to 1899, and then returning in 1913 before being dissolved in 1914. Remedios de Escalada is a city located in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, within Lanús Partido, Gran Buenos Aires. It covers an area of 9.95 km2 and the population was 81,465 in 2001; the demonym for its inhabitants is "escaladense." History The town was first established by Agustín Eguren as ''Edén Argentino'' ("Argentine Eden"), a bedroom community, in 1873. Its population remained in the few hundreds until, in 1890, the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway inaugurated a rail yard in the adjoining Villa Galíndez, to the east; ''La Fraternidad'', one of Argentina's first and oldest trade unions, was founded by workers at the site in 1887. Further such installations opened by Eliseo Ramírez and the Ramírez de Lafuente family in 1901 made the area a prime rail operations hub, and the Great Southern inaugurated its first commuter station there in 1902. William Newton Stirling (died 13 November 1914) was a Scottish football player, who played as forward for Lomas Athletic Club and Lomas Academy. He was top scorer in the championship of 1897. Career Born in Scotland, Stirling began his career with Lomas Athletic Club in 1891. With Lomas, he won his first title in 1893. The Copa de Honor Municipalidad de Buenos Aires was an Argentine official football cup competition. It was contested fourteen times between 1905 and 1920. Racing is the most winning team of the competition, with 4 titles. Overview This cup was played by teams from Buenos Aires and Rosario (which belonged to Liga Rosarina de Football). The champion of this tournament qualified to play the Copa de Honor Cousenier versus the winner of Uruguayan Copa de Honor representing the Association of that country. In 1936, a new "Copa de Honor" was played under a regular Primera División season, with 18 teams playing a single-round tournament. San Lorenzo finished 1st and was awarded the cup. In July 2013, the Argentine Football Association recognized the 1936 edition as a Primera División honour awarded to the club. The Copa de Competencia Jockey Club was an official Argentine football cup competition contested between 1907 and 1933. The winner of this Cup was allowed to play the Tie Cup against the Uruguayan champion of Copa de Competencia. Alumni and San Isidro are the most winning teams of the competition, with 3 titles each. History The Copa de Competencia Jockey Club was first awarded in 1907, being Alumni its first winner. Teams affiliated to the Argentine Football Association and Liga Rosarina de Football were allowed to enter this competition. Rosarian teams participated until the 1919 edition. From the 1921 edition, only teams from the cities of Buenos Aires and La Plata took part of the competition. After the final edition of the Tie Cup in 1919, the Copa de Competencia Jockey Club was played on four more occasions in 1921, 1925, 1931 and 1936.
