Lanton, Missouri
Lanton is an unincorporated community in southern Howell County, Missouri, United States. It is located on Missouri Route 17 between Missouri Route 142 and the Arkansas Arkansas ( ) is a landlocked state in the West South Central region of the Southern United States. It borders Missouri to the north, Tennessee and Mississippi to the east, Louisiana to the south, Texas to the southwest, and Oklahoma ... line approximately one mile to the south. A post office called Lanton was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1977. The community's name is an amalgamation of Lancaster and Sutton, the surnames of two early settlers. The Lanton Fire Department boasts the lowest ISO rating in the region of most rural fire departments, and operates out of two stations, one in Lanton proper, the other halfway to West Plains. Howell County, Missouri
Howell County is in southern Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 39,750. The largest city and county seat is West Plains. The county was officially organized on March 2, 1857, and is named after Josiah Howell, a pioneer settler in the Howell Valley. Howell County comprises the West Plains, MO, Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Howell County was organized on March 2, 1857, from Oregon County, and is named for Josiah Howell, who made the first settlement in Howell Valley. The first circuit court met in a log cabin one mile east of West Plains, according to an 1876 account. A small, wooden courthouse was built on the square in West Plains in 1859. It was damaged during the Civil War in 1862. The county was reorganized three years later, but all of the county records were destroyed in an 1866 fire. Missouri Route 17
Route 17 is a highway in central and southern Missouri. Its northern terminus is at U.S. Route 54 in Eugene, which is six miles (10 km) northeast of Eldon; its southern terminus is at the Arkansas state line where it continues into Arkansas as Highway 395. Between Waynesville and east of Laquey, part of the road was historic U.S. Route 66. South of Interstate 44, Route 17 enters the Mark Twain National Forest and passes through the western edge of Fort Leonard Wood. Originally, Route 17 terminated at Mountain View. In 2021, a section of the route in Howell, Texas County, Missouri was reduced for improvements.
