Lanexa is an unincorporated community located partially in New Kent County and partially in James City County, Virginia, United States. The ZIP Code for Lanexa is 23089. Lanexa is located by the Chickahominy River and has many tourism sites for camping and outdoor activities. Diascund Creek runs immediately to the east of the center of Lanexa. A dam creates the Diascund Creek Reservoir on the north side of the community. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Lanexa had a station on the Peninsula Extension of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway near where the tracks run along the Chickahominy River west of Diascund Creek. Pamunkey River, Lanexa
The Pamunkey Indian Tribe is a federally recognized tribe of Pamunkey people in Virginia. They control the Pamunkey Indian Reservation in King William County, Virginia. Historically, they spoke the Pamunkey language. They are one of 11 Native American tribes in Virginia and an Indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands. The tribe became the Commonwealth of Virginia's first federally recognized tribe receiving its status in January 2016. The historical Pamunkey people were part of the Powhatan paramountcy, made up of Algonquian-speaking nations. Diascund Creek
Diascund Creek is the major tributary of the Chickahominy River in Virginia, part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The creek flows south and forms the border between New Kent County on the west and James City County on the east. In 1963, an earthen dam was constructed across the creek above Lanexa to create a 1,100 acre reservoir for Newport News Waterworks. The only public access directly to the creek is from Diascund Reservoir Park part of James City County's park system. There are also access points for members of local civic associations on both sides of the tidal creek. Since at least colonial times, the creek has been bridged at Lanexa where U.S. Route 60 crosses it. During the Revolutionary War British troops destroyed American naval supplies which were stored there on the night of April 22, 1781. Peninsula Extension
The Peninsula Extension which created the Peninsula Subdivision of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) was the new railroad line on the Virginia Peninsula from Richmond to southeastern Warwick County. Its principal purpose was to provide an important new pathway for coal mined in West Virginia to reach the harbor of Hampton Roads for coastal and export shipping on collier ships. Completed on 16 October 1881, the new double-tracked railroad and the other development visions of industrialist Collis Potter Huntington resulted in a 15-year transition of the rural farm village of Newport News into a new independent city which also became home to the world's largest shipyard. The railroad, one of the later developed in Virginia, became important to many communities, opening transportation options, and stimulating commerce and military operations on the Peninsula throughout the 20th century. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway was a Class I railroad formed in 1869 in Virginia from several smaller Virginia railroads begun in the 19th century.
