Lando, South Carolina
Lando is a rural unincorporated community in Chester County, South Carolina, United States and a former textile village. Lando has a post office with the ZIP Code of 29724; the population of the ZCTA for 29724 was 89 at the 2000 census. History Settled in the 1760s, and called Walker's Mill, the future Lando was a prime location for watermills along Fishing Creek. For most of the 20th century, the main employer in the village was Manetta Mills, one of the largest blanket makers in the world. After the mill closed in 1991, Lando lost most of its population, going from about 2000 to about 20 who still live in town. Lando School
Lando School is a historic school building located at Lando, Chester County, South Carolina. It was built in 1904–1905, and is a three-story, rectangular brick building set upon a concrete foundation and with an L-shaped hipped roof. It features brick on the first two floors and brick and stucco on the third floor and is in the Italian Renaissance Revival style. The first two floors of the school housed classrooms and the main level of the auditorium, while the third floor was essentially balcony seating for the auditorium. Lando School was built as the school for Manetta Mill, and closed in 1955. Manetta Mills remained in operation under a succession of owners until 1991. ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are statistical entities developed by the United States Census Bureau for tabulating summary statistics. These were introduced with the Census 2000 and continued with the 2010 Census and 5 year American Community Survey datasets. They were updated again for the 2020 census. This new entity was developed to overcome the difficulties in precisely defining the land area covered by each ZIP code. Defining the extent of an area is necessary in order to tabulate census data for that area. Area codes 803 and 839 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the central part of the U.S. state of South Carolina. The numbering plan area (NPA) is anchored by the city of Columbia, the state capital.
