Lake Coogee, Western Australia
Lake Coogee is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn, and named after Lake Coogee, located within the suburb. History In 2019, the City of Cockburn approved a split of the suburb of Munster, whereby the north-western part of the suburb became the new suburb of Lake Coogee, while another part, in the south-west, was added to the suburb of Henderson. Only the eastern part of Munster remained part of the existing suburb. The changes came into effect on 30 March 2020. Prior to being part of the suburb of Munster from 1954, the district had been known as ''South Coogee'' since the 1870s and this earlier name remains in use by older settlers of the area. The district is one of the earliest parts of Western Australia to be settled by Europeans and the remains of the cottages built by the Pensioner Guards in the 1880s can still be seen around the Lake Coogee reserve. Beeliar Regional Park is a conservation park approximately south of the central business district in Perth, Western Australia, located within the Citys of Cockburn, Kwinana and Melville. The regional park is named after the indigenous Beeliar people of the area. In Western Australia, regional parks consist of areas of land that have been identified as having outstanding conservation, landscape and recreation values. Pensioner Guards
The Pensioner Guards were English military personnel who served on convict transportation ships en route to the Swan River Colony between 1850 and 1868, and were given employment and grants of land on arrival. Their initial employment lasted for six months, or the duration of the voyage, whichever was the longer time. After this they became "pensioners" and had to serve 12 days per year as well as whenever called upon. They paraded annually in Perth at the Pensioner Barracks. Part of their purpose was to fulfil a promise by the British government to send free settlers to the colony to dilute the convicts, and to maintain law and order in the colony. Many enlisted in the British Army as boys, around 15–17 years of age, and served in many parts of the world including India, Afghanistan, China, Crimea for about 21 years before being pensioned off. Lake Coogee
Lake Coogee is a saline lake in the suburb of Lake Coogee, south-west of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It is part of Beeliar Regional Park. The lake has given its name to a number of suburbs in the area, namely Coogee, North Coogee and Lake Coogee. The lake itself was part of the suburb of Munster until 30 March 2020, when it became part of the new suburb of Lake Coogee. Overview In the local Nyungar language, the lake was originally called Kou-Gee, which was first recorded by European settlers in 1841 and variously spelled as Koojee, Coojee and Coogee. Beeliar, Western Australia
Beeliar is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn. The name refers to the Beeliar people, a group of Aboriginal Australians who had land rights over the southern half of Perth's metropolitan area. The suburb contains the Thomsons Lake Nature Reserve. "Beeliar" is a Noongar word that translates to "river" or "water running through". The suburb was named after an early settler-colonialist, Robert Menli Lyon, who recorded and interacted with the local Aboriginal group in the area circa the nineteenth century. Before European contact, the suburb was occupied by the Beeliar group of the Whadjuk nation, who are part of the broader Noongar language region.
