Laclede Gas Building
The Laclede Gas Building is a 31-story, skyscraper located at 720 Olive Street in Downtown St. Louis, Missouri. It was designed by the Emery Roth & Sons architecture firm, and was built between 1967 and 1969 for the Laclede Gas Company, which had outgrown its 10-story building at 1017 Olive Street. The Laclede Gas Company vacated the building in March 2015, after 45 years in the space. The building has since been converted to mixed-use, and presently consists of both office and residential spaces. Uniquely, all power for the building is generated in-house using natural gas burning generators, and therefore is not interconnected to the local electricity provider. The building also houses one of the eastbound entrances to MetroLink's 8th & Pine subway station. Emery Roth ( hu, Róth Imre, July 17, 1871 – August 20, 1948) was an American architect of Hungarian-Jewish descent who designed many of the definitive New York City hotels and apartment buildings of the 1920s and 1930s, incorporating Beaux-Arts and Art Deco details. His sons continued in the family enterprise, largely expanding the firm under the name Emery Roth & Sons. Life and career Born in Gálszécs, Austria-Hungary (now Sečovce, Slovakia) to a Jewish family, he emigrated to the United States at the age of 13 after his family fell into poverty upon his father's death. 8th & Pine Station
8th & Pine station is a St. Louis MetroLink subway station. This station is located in Downtown St. Louis and primarily serves the Central Business District, its residents, and commuters. There is a MetroStore located above the station at 801 Pine Street where tickets, passes and Metro branded gear can be purchased. The station was built within the historic St. Louis Freight Tunnel that originally opened in 1874. Built to carry train traffic between the Eads Bridge and the Mill Creek Valley rail yards, it saw its last train (Amtrak) in 1974. Renovation of the tunnels began in 1991 to prepare them for the opening of MetroLink in 1993. On January 20, 2023, Metro Transit announced that 8th & Pine would undergo a full rehabilitation.
