La Voulte-sur-Rhône
La Voulte-sur-Rhône (, literally ''La Voulte on Rhône''; ) is a commune in the Ardèche department in southern France. Population Lagerstätte La Voulte-sur-Rhône is a marine Lagerstätte (sedimentary deposit) located in France. It is Middle Jurassic (Callovian) in age, and is known for the variety of fossils it produces, including cephalopods, such as '' Proteroctopus ribeti'', '' Rhomboteuthis lehmani'', and ''Vampyronassa rhodanica''. Fossilized cephalopods are rare, and Voulte-sur-Rhône is prized among paleontologists as one of only a few known localities known to produce such cephalopod fossils. Fossil preservation is by pyrite, a geologically rare process. ''Vampyronassa rhodanica'' ("vampire fish trap") is an extinction, extinct Vampyromorphida, vampyromorph cephalopod known from around 20 fossils from the Callovian, Lower Callovian (165–164 annum, Ma) of La Voulte-sur-Rhône (lagerstätte), La Voulte-sur-Rhône, Ardèche, France. Morphology ''Vampyronassa'' reached total length about . This taxon differs from the modern vampire squid in having longer first dorsal arms, a larger hyponome, and a more elongated mantle (mollusc), mantle. The original description noted possible Bioluminescence, luminous organs which a restudy could not confirm. It had eight arms with uniserial Sucker (zoology), suckers flanked by cirri, same as modern vampire squid. Brittle stars, serpent stars, or ophiuroids (; ; referring to the serpent-like arms of the brittle star) are echinoderms in the class Ophiuroidea, closely related to starfish. The Hunsrück () is a long, triangular, pronounced upland in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is bounded by the valleys of the Moselle-Saar (north-to-west), the Nahe (south), and the Rhine (east). It is continued by the Taunus mountains, past the Rhine and by the Eifel past the Moselle. To the south of the Nahe is a lower, hilly country forming the near bulk of the Palatinate region and all of the, smaller, Saarland. Below its north-east corner is Koblenz. As the Hunsrück proceeds east it acquires north-south width and three notable gaps in its southern ridges.
