''La taverna della libertà'' (lit. The Tavern of Freedom) is a 1950 Italian film directed by Maurice Cam. It is often presented as a remake of the 1949 French film ''Drame au Vel'd'Hiv','' also directed by Cam but the films, both set during the war, present very different plots. Maurice Cam
Maurice Cam (1901–1974) was a French film director. He directed fourteen films between 1939 and 1967 as well as working as assistant director and other various jobs in the film industry. Cam was originally an illustrator, who worked on film posters. Cam made his directoral debut with the 1939 thriller '' Metropolitan'', set partly on the Paris Métro. Memo Benassi
Domenico "Memo" Benassi (21 June 1886 – 24 February 1957) was an Italian stage and film actor who appeared in more than forty films in a mixture of leading and supporting roles. Life and career Born in Sorbolo, Benassi initially formed as a musician, studying cello at the Parma Conservatory. His professional acting career was launched in the late 1910s by Gualtiero Tumiati, who offered him a role in his stage company after noting him during an amateur theatrical performance. He was later enrolled in several major theater companies of the time, notably working with Eleonora Duse and Emma and Irma Gramatica. In 1925, he formed his own stage company. He made his film debut in 1932, and had main roles in films by Alessandro Blasetti and Max Ophüls, among others. Marco Vicario (20 September 1925 – 10 September 2020) was an Italian film actor, screenwriter, film producer and director. He appeared in 23 films between 1950 and 1958. He also wrote for 13 films, produced 12 and directed a further 11. He was born in Rome, Italy in September 1925. Vicario died in September 2020 at the age of 94. Enrico Musy, better known as Enrico Glori (3 August 1901 – 22 April 1966) was an Italian actor. Biography Born in Naples to a wealthy family of French origin, Glori became an actor in his thirties. He spent most of his time in France where he eventually made his film debut in the 1934 film ''Street Without a Name'' directed by Pierre Chenal. He starred in many other French films for the next three years until he was called back to Italy in 1937 after finishing his work on several films which includes '' The Former Mattia Pascal''. Glori was often known for his portrayal of villainous, sadistic and treacherous characters in most of his movies through the late 1930s and early 1940s. Giulio Stival (14 March 1902 – 1 April 1953) was an Italian stage and film actor. Life and career Born in Venice, at a young age, Stival founded an amateur dramatics in which he served both as director and as actor. He made his professional debut in 1927, with the stage company led by Emma Gramatica. During his career Stival worked with some of the major stage companies of his time, including the ones led by Ruggero Ruggeri, Antonio Gandusio, Memo Benassi, Armando Migliari, Dina Galli (with whom he shared the huge success of the comedy play ''Felicita Colombo'') and the Compagnia dell'Eliseo, with whom he enjoyed significant critical acclaim for his performances in some George Bernard Shaw's adaptations.
