La Romana is a municipality and capital of the southeastern La Romana Province, province of La Romana, opposite Catalina Island, Dominican Republic, Catalina Island. It is one of the 10 largest cities in the Dominican Republic with a population estimated in 2022 at 153,241 within the city limits (metropolitan area, metropolitan population: 270,000), of whom 149,840 are urban and 3,401 are rural. The name ''Romana'' comes from the word "Bomana", a name given by Indians to what is known today as Romana River. The modern La Romana International Airport was opened in 2000. The city is near several other cities, such as San Pedro de Macorís and the national capital, Santo Domingo, Santo Domingo de Guzmán. La Romana Casa De Campo International Airport is an international airport located on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, adjacent to the tourist town of La Romana, Dominican Republic, La Romana and the Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic, Casa de Campo resort. Casa De Campo, Dominican Republic
Casa de Campo (Spanish for "Country House") is a Ponderosa-style tropical seaside residential community in La Romana on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic. It was developed in the 1970s by Gulf and Western Industries on of its Central Romana sugar mill's land. History The name is Spanish for "Country House," and it was originally a retreat for Charles Bluhdorn, who built his estate during the 1970s on Gulf and Western's sugar mill property, Central Romana. When he died in 1983, it became the first resort in the country. One of Bluhdorn's friends, the famous Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta, was hired to do the interior design for Casa de Campo. After Bluhdorn's death, the Cuban-American Fanjul family bought Casa and opened it to paying guests. Central Romana Port
Central Romana Port is located in Romana River, La Romana, Dominican Republic, and belongs to Central Romana Corporation, which also owns the largest sugar mill in the country. Overview Port of La Romana is private property and is supervised by the Dominican Port Authority. It was built in the 1950s by the Central Romana division of the South Puerto Rico Sugar Company (which was later acquired by Gulf and Western Industries). This harbor was formerly only for exportation of the sugar mill, but in consequence of the tourism development in the Dominican Republic, Central Romana Corporation decided to add a new tourism terminal to carry people to the Catalina Island from there. Altos De Chavón
Altos de Chavón is a tourist attraction, a re-creation of a 16th-century Mediterranean–style village, located atop the Chavón River in the city of La Romana, Dominican Republic. It is the most popular attraction in the city and hosts a cultural center, an archeological museum, and an amphitheater. The project was conceived by the Italian architect Roberto Copa and the industrialist Charles Bluhdorn. History The project began in 1976, when a stone mountain had to be blasted for the construction of a nearby road. Charles Bluhdorn, chairman of then Paramount Pictures parent company Gulf+Western, had the idea of using the stones to re-create a sixteenth-century style Mediterranean village, similar to some of the architecture found in the Ciudad Colonial (Santo Domingo), historic center of Santo Domingo.
