La Morandière-Rochebaucourt
La Morandière-Rochebaucourt () is a municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, located in the Abitibi Regional County Municipality. It is part of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region and the population is 351 as of 2021. The municipality was formed on January 1, 2023, through the amalgamation of La Morandière and Rochebaucourt. In addition to the two namesake population centres, the municipality also includes the hamlets of Castagnier () and Lac-Castagnier (). History The location where La Morandière currently sits was initially settled in around 1916 by Émilien Plante, Uldéric Hardy and Charles Rochette but the territory didn't have any official status until January 1, 1983, the date when the municipality of La Morandière was founded. Rochebaucourt () is a former municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, located in the Abitibi Regional County Municipality. In 2023, it was merged with La Morandière to from the new Municipality of La Morandière-Rochebaucourt. History In 1935 as part of the Vautrin Settlement Plan, the place was colonized by pioneers from Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, Saint-Hyacinthe, and Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. It was first known as Colonie-33 but this was quickly replaced by Rochebaucourt, the name of the geographic township in which it is located. La Rochebaucourt was a cavalry captain of the Régiment de Languedoc in General Montcalm's army. In 1940, the Parish of Saint-Antoine-de-Rochebaucourt was established. Lieutenant-General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm-Gozon, Marquis de Montcalm de Saint-Veran (; 28 February 1712 – 14 September 1759) was a French Royal Army officer best known for his unsuccessful defence of New France during the French and Indian War. Montcalm was born in Vestric-et-Candiac near Nîmes to an aristocratic family, and joined the French army at a young age. The Languedoc Regiment (, ) was a French Army regiment active in the 18th century. It is known mainly for its role in the Seven Years' War, when it served in the French and Indian War. History The regiment arrived in Quebec City on June 19, 1755. The soldiers left immediately for Fort Saint Frédéric and, on orders of Jean Erdman, Baron Dieskau, pushed the British troops back to Lake George. After the Battle of Lake George, the regiment was sent to Fort Carillon, then under construction. The regiment was then sent towards the south and participated in the successful Siege of Fort William Henry. On July 8, 1758, the second battalion participated at the Battle of Carillon. Salaberry-de-Valleyfield () is a city in southwestern Quebec, Canada, in the Regional County Municipality of Beauharnois-Salaberry. The population as of 2021 was 42,410. The historic downtown is a major touristic centre for the area. Due to the presence of Lake St. Francis on the St. Lawrence River, St. Francis Bay in downtown, and of numerous rivers and canals all over the town, the city is nicknamed "The Venice of Quebec".
