LaFenice
''LaFenice'' (''The Phoenix'') is a public sculpture by the Architecture and Vision design team, Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler, sited in the Piazza della Memoria of the waterfront in Messina, Sicily in Italy. The sculpture for this memorial square was selected in a city-sponsored competition as part of a larger urban renewal project started in 2003 to revitalize the public spaces between buildings built in the 1930s along the quay. The sculpture was unveiled on June 23, 2011. Site and design The sculpture is situated at the intersection of several important axises, connecting the busy port to the city, tracing the boulevard flanking the waterfront, and ultimately, between the Earth and sky. Architecture and Vision (AV) is an international multidisciplinary design agency that was formed in 2003 by Arturo Vittori in partnership with Andreas Volger. AV works in architecture, design, and art. The practice is mainly based around technology transfer between disciplines such as aerospace, art, and architecture. Andreas Vogler
Andreas Vogler (born January 15, 1964) is a Swiss architect, designer and artist. He is founder and director of the architecture and design firm, Andreas Vogler Studio. Early life Andreas Vogler was raised in Basel, Switzerland. After several semesters of studies in Art History and Literature, Vogler worked as an interior designer with Alinea AG in Basel. In 1988–1994, he studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) in Zurich spending one exchange semester at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence ( RISD) in the United States and graduated with a diploma project for an energy-independent, pre-fabricated Weather Station on the Weissfluhjoch/Arosa. Arturo Vittori (born October 1, 1971, in Viterbo, Italy), is an Italian artist, architect, and industrial designer. He is co-founder and director of the architecture and design team Architecture and Vision. Biography Arturo Vittori was raised in Bomarzo, Italy. From 1989 to 1993 Vittori studied Fine Arts in Viterbo and in 1993 he began to study architecture at the University of Florence, where, after a two-year experience at the Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany, he graduated in 1996 with an award-winning thesis project entitled “ International Space Station: Travelling Network.” In 1997 he did his Master in ‘Technician in Architectural Diagnostic’ in Modena. 1908 Messina Earthquake
The 1908 Messina earthquake (also known as the 1908 Messina and Reggio earthquake) occurred on 28 December in Sicily and Calabria, southern Italy with a moment magnitude of 7.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (''Extreme''). The epicenter was in the Strait of Messina which separates Sicily from the Italian mainland. The cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria were almost completely destroyed and between 75,000 and 82,000 people died. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to strike Europe. Cause of the earthquake According to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology, the earthquake was caused by a large, low-angle SE-dipping, blind normal fault, lying mainly offshore in the Strait of Messina, between plates. RFR was founded in Paris in 1981 as Rice Francis Ritchie sarl, by Peter Rice (structural engineer), Martin Francis (industrial and yacht designer) and Ian Ritchie (architect). It had offices in Stuttgart, Germany; Shanghai, China; and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. RFR is a design engineering firm with its head office based in Paris and specialises in the design of complex structures and sophisticated building envelopes that reconcile engineering and architecture. DMX512 is a standard for digital communication networks that are commonly used to control lighting and effects. It was originally intended as a standardized method for controlling stage lighting dimmers, which, prior to DMX512, had employed various incompatible proprietary protocols. Phoenix (mythology)
The phoenix is an immortal bird associated with Greek mythology (with analogs in many cultures) that cyclically regenerates or is otherwise born again. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by rising from the ashes of its predecessor. Some legends say it dies in a show of flames and combustion, others that it simply dies and decomposes before being born again. In the ''Motif-Index of Folk-Literature'', a tool used by folklorists, the phoenix is classified as motif B32.Thompson. (2001: 581). ''Cloud Gate'' is a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, that is the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. The sculpture and AT&T Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed "The Bean" because of its shape, a name Kapoor initially disliked, but later grew fond of. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It measures , and weighs .
