Kothi (gender)
A kothi in the culture of the Indian subcontinent, is a man or boy who takes on an "effeminate" role in same sex relationships, often with a desire to be the penetrated member in sexual intercourse. The origins of the term Kothi are unclear. The original meaning was intended as a slur, similar to "fag" or "sissy." Local equivalents include ''durani'' (Kolkata), ''menaka'' (Cochin), '' meti'' (Nepal), and ''zenana'' (Pakistan). The male partners who perform the penetrative acts are known as Panthi. Kothis differ from Hijras as they do not live in the kind of intentional communities that hijras usually live in. They are similar to the Hijra in that they may take a same-sex lover for a period of time, and they may perform sexual favors for men through prostitution. Other sources state that the term Kothi is an all-encompassing term for males in India who do not conform to their social gender. So the term Kothi would include the identity of Hijra, among others. Effeminacy
Effeminacy is the embodiment of traits and/or expressions in those who are not of the female sex (e.g. boys and men) that are often associated with what is generally perceived to be feminine behaviours, mannerisms, styles, or gender roles, rather than with traditionally masculine behaviours, mannerisms, styles or roles. Effeminacy and other gender expressions are independent of a person's sexuality or sexual identity and are displayed by people of all sexualities and none. However, effeminacy is seen in some societies as something embodied by some in the homosexual male community. Meti (gender)
Meti is a term used, in the country of Nepal, referring to a feminine displaying and masculine bodied individual. Metis are a part of a larger group of queer individuals in Nepal referred to as ''anya''. Metis are an officially recognized ''third gender'' in the country of Nepal as of a Supreme Court ruling in 2007. As of this Supreme Court ruling, metis are able to be officially recognized by the Nepalese government and able to have a government-issued ID card listing “both” as an option under “gender." This also set a precedent of using self-determination as a source of proof in determining a person eligibility in establishing a gender on government documents. Transgender In Asia
A transgender (often abbreviated as trans) person is someone whose gender identity or gender expression does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth. Many transgender people experience dysphoria, which they seek to alleviate through transitioning, often adopting a different name and set of pronouns in the process. Additionally, they may undergo sex reassignment therapies such as hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery to more closely align their primary and secondary sex characteristics with their gender identity.
