Kesur Singh was a Risaldar Major in the British Indian Army who is credited with being the first Sikh settler in Canada. The British Indian Army, commonly referred to as the Indian Army, was the main military of the British Raj before its dissolution in 1947. Sikhs ( or ; pa, ਸਿੱਖ, ' ) are people who adhere to Sikhism, Sikhism (Sikhi), a Monotheism, monotheistic religion that originated in the late 15th century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, based on the revelation of Guru Nanak. RMS ''Empress of India'' was an ocean liner built in 1890-1891 by Naval Construction & Armaments Co, Barrow-in-Furness, England for Canadian Pacific Steamships. This ship would be the first of two CP vessels to be named ''Empress of India,'' and on 28 April 1891, she was the very first of many ships named ''Empress'' arriving at Vancouver harbor. The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria was officially celebrated on 22 June 1897 to mark the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession on 20 June 1837. Queen Victoria was the first British monarch ever to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee.
