Ken Pitt
Kenneth Cooper Pitt (10 November 1922 – 25 February 2019) was a British publicist and talent manager, who managed the career of musicians including David Bowie in the late 1960s. Biography Pitt was born in Uxbridge, Middlesex. In the 1950s, he was responsible for publicising American musicians and bands touring the UK, including Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and Jerry Lee Lewis. His first venture into management was with Romani street singer Danny Purches, but he had more success in the early 1960s with the band Manfred Mann, whom he persuaded to record the Barry and Greenwich song "Do Wah Diddy Diddy". He also managed singer Crispian St. Peters and American group Goldie and the Gingerbreads. In 1965, Pitt was approached by Ralph Horton with a view to co-managing singer David Jones, who had yet to change his name to David Bowie. Pitt agreed, and in early 1967 became Bowie's sole manager. Uxbridge
Uxbridge () is a suburban town in west London and the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Hillingdon. Situated west-northwest of Charing Cross, it is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan. Uxbridge formed part of the parish of Hillingdon in the county of Middlesex, and was a significant local commercial centre from an early time. As part of the suburban growth of London in the 20th century it expanded and increased in population, becoming a municipal borough in 1955, and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. "Space Oddity" is a song by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. It was first released on 11 July 1969 by Philips Records as a 7-inch single, then as the opening track of his second studio album ''David Bowie''. After the commercial failure of his self-titled debut album in 1967, Bowie's manager Kenneth Pitt commissioned '' Love You till Tuesday'', a promotional film intended to introduce Bowie to a larger audience. For the film, Bowie wrote "Space Oddity", a tale about a fictional astronaut named Major Tom; its title and subject matter were partly inspired by Stanley Kubrick's '' 2001: A Space Odyssey'' (1968) and Bowie's feelings of alienation at that point in his career. ''Love You till Tuesday'' is a promotional film designed to showcase the talents of a 22-year old David Bowie, made in 1969. The film was an attempt by Bowie's manager, Kenneth Pitt, to bring Bowie to a wider audience. Pitt had undertaken the film after a suggestion by Günther Schneider, producer of German TV show ''4-3-2-1 Musik Für Junge Leute'' for the ZDF network. The film ended up being shelved, and was not released until 1984, when it finally came out on VHS. A DVD version was released in UK in 2005. Production Pitt hired his friend Malcolm J Thomson to direct the half-hour film, which was originally planned to showcase seven of Bowie's songs, including four from his 1967 debut album (three of them newly re-recorded for the film), plus the follow-up single "Let Me Sleep Beside You" and new compositions "When I'm Five" and "Ching-a-Ling".
