Kelvin Atkinson
Kelvin Atkinson (born April 8, 1969) is a former Democratic Party (United States), Democratic member of the Nevada Senate, representing Nevada's 4th Senate district, District 4. He previously served in the Nevada Assembly, representing Clark County District 17 from 2002 to 2012. On April 22, 2013, during a debate on repealing same-sex marriage in Nevada, Nevada's gay marriage ban, Atkinson announced on the Senate floor that: "I’m black. I'm gay." It was the first time he had publicly identified as gay. He became the fifth openly LGBT member of the Nevada legislature, alongside Senators David Parks (politician), David Parks and Patricia Spearman and Assemblymembers James Healey (Nevada politician), James Healey and Andrew Martin (Nevada politician), Andrew Martin. Nevada Senate
The Nevada Senate is the upper house of the Nevada Legislature, the state legislature of U.S. state of Nevada, the lower house being the Nevada Assembly. It currently (2012–2021) consists of 21 members from single-member districts. In the previous redistricting (2002–2011) there were 19 districts, two of which were multimember. Since 2012, there have been 21 districts, each formed by combining two neighboring state assembly districts. Each State Senator represented approximately 128,598 as of the 2010 United States Census. Article Four of the Constitution of Nevada sets that State Senators serve staggered four-year terms. In addition, the size of the Senate is set to be no less than one-third and no greater than one-half of the size of the Assembly. Andrew Martin (born February 19, 1964) is an American politician and certified public accountant who has served as the Clark County Democratic Party Chair, as a Member of the Nevada State Economic Forum, a Member of the Clark County School District Bond Oversight Committee, and as a member of the Nevada Assembly. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Martin graduated from Binghamton University in New York before earning his CPA license and beginning a career as an accountant. He later founded his own accounting firm. In 2012, he was elected to the Assembly, although his eligibility to serve in the legislature was disputed during the election.
