KXGM (89.1 Hertz, MHz, "Air 1") is an FM radio, FM radio station city of license, licensed to serve Hiawatha, Iowa, United States. The station is owned by Educational Media Foundation. It airs a Christian Worship radio format, music format. The station was assigned the KWOF-FM call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on July 17, 2002 and changed its call letters to KXGM-FM on August 8, 2008, to reflect the new ownership. The station changed to its current KXGM call sign on March 25, 2015. Ownership On March 21, 2002, more than five years after first applying for the frequency in January 1997, Friendship Communications Inc. was awarded a construction permit for 89.1 FM over fellow applicants American Family Association and the University of Northern Iowa. Hiawatha, Iowa
Hiawatha is a city in Linn County, Iowa, United States. It is a suburb located in the northwestern side of Cedar Rapids and is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,183 at the time of the 2020 census, an increase from 6,480 in 2000. History In 1946, Fay Clark, an entrepreneur of several ventures located in Linn County north of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had a vision of houses and a highway running through a new city. In 1950 Clark and another 45 residents signed a petition seeking to become the 17th incorporated town in Linn County. The town would be named after Clark's trailer company. That same year he and Henry Katz of Marion established the Linn County Fire Association to help provide fire protection to rural communities. Clark served as mayor of Hiawatha from 1950 to 1958, and again from 1961 to 1963. Clark died in 1991 at the age of 84. Air1 is an American Christian radio, Christian radio network. Owned by the Educational Media Foundation (EMF), it primarily broadcasts contemporary worship music, and is a sister to the EMF's K-Love network. History In 1986, KLRD began broadcasting Christian Hit/Rock music from Yucaipa, California, and went by the on-air moniker K-LORD. In 1994, KLXD, KXRD was started as a sister station to KLRD. In 1995, K-LORD changed its name to "Air1" and began broadcasting via satellite from St. Helens, Oregon. Linn County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 230,299, making it the second-most populous county in Iowa. The county seat is Cedar Rapids.
