Kōji Kakinuma
Kōji Kakinuma (柿沼康二 ''Kakinuma Kōji'', born July 16, 1970) is a Japanese calligrapher. Kakinuma was born in Yaita, Tochigi Prefecture. He began his calligraphy training at the age of five first under his father, Suiryū Kakinuma, and then under Yūkei Teshima, who is considered one of the Sanpitsu (“Three Brushes”) of the Shōwa Era, and Ichijō Uematsu. In 1993, Kakinuma graduated from the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, Tokyo Gakugei University, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Before becoming a full-time fine artist, he worked as a high-school teacher. From 2006 to 2007 he held a visiting fellowship at Princeton University. Two trademarks of his calligraphy work are oversized formats of up to 750 × 1100 cm painted with giant brushes, and the frequent repetition of the same character or phrase, which he calls "trance work". Shōko Kanazawa
Shōko Kanazawa (金澤翔子 ''Kanazawa Shōko'', born 1985) is a Japanese calligraphy, Japanese calligrapher. Early life and career Kanazawa was born in Tokyo in 1985 and diagnosed with Down syndrome. Her mother, Yasuko Kanazawa, had studied calligraphy under Taiun Yanagida, another notable calligraphist. When Shōko was five years old, Yasuko opened a calligraphy school at her home in Ōta, Tokyo where she began teaching her daughter calligraphy as well. The school, opened for children in their neighborhood, was to help Shōko make friends. At the age of ten, Shōko Kanazawa had, according to her mother, learned the basics of calligraphy, and was able to write a sutra consisting of 276 characters. In 2001, she won her first award at a calligraphy student exhibition. Despite these successes, Kanazawa and her mother faced tragedy when she was 14 years old, her father died of a heart attack, adding to the family's hardship. Jason Logan is an inkmaker, illustrator, writer, graphic designer, and art director based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His illustrations have appeared in numerous publications including ''The New York Times'', ''The Walrus'', and ''The Globe and Mail''. His first book, '' If We Ever Break Up, This Is My Book'' has been translated into seven languages.
